From Amazon.co.uk

After 12 years of thinking about it (and waiting for movie technology to catch up with his visions), James Cameron followed up his unsinkable Titanic with Avatar, a sci-fi epic meant to trump all previous sci-fi epics. Set in the future on a distant planet, Avatar spins a simple little parable about greedy colonizers (that would be mankind) messing up the lush tribal world of Pandora. A paraplegic Marine named Jake (Sam Worthington) acts through a 9-foot-tall avatar that allows him to roam the planet and pass as one of the Na'vi, the blue-skinned, large-eyed native people who would very much like to live their peaceful lives without the interference of the visitors. Although he's supposed to be gathering intel for the badass general (Stephen Lang) who'd like to lay waste to the planet and its inhabitants, Jake naturally begins to take a liking to the Na'vi, especially the feisty Neytiri (Zoë Saldana, whose entire performance, recorded by Cameron's complicated motion-capture system, exists as a digitally rendered Na'vi). The movie uses state-of-the-art 3D technology to plunge the viewer deep into Cameron's crazy toy box of planetary ecosystems and high-tech machinery. Maybe it's the fact that Cameron seems torn between his two loves--awesome destructive gizmos and flower-power message mongering--that makes Avatar's pursuit of its point ultimately uncertain. That, and the fact that Cameron's dialogue continues to clunk badly. If you're won over by the movie's trippy new world, the characters will be forgivable as broad, useful archetypes rather than standard-issue stereotypes, and you might be able to overlook the unsurprising central plot. (The overextended "take that, Michael Bay" final battle sequences could tax even Cameron enthusiasts, however.) It doesn't measure up to the hype (what could?) yet Avatar frequently hits a giddy delirium all its own. The film itself is our Pandora, a sensation-saturated universe only the movies could create. --Robert Horton

I have also been looking for this dvd for ages. It seems bizarre that it is not available here as I'm sure it would sell like "hot cakes"

I can't believe that I can't get a copy of this! It's just unbelievable. I've just watched the Winds of War - and now have to stop dead just when things are really heating up. Shame Amazon!!!!

This is not a review but just as important. for those wishing to choose between the dvd or blu-ray as amazon have listed the blu-ray features.

So Actually: just for the info, the DVD version will only have 4 hours of special features (this is verified elswehere and on the hut website). where as the blu-ray will have the full 8hrs. Cheers.

Ok so the film we all know about, how can you not? Personally I expected to dislike it given the enormous amount of hype that went with it, but in actual fact I thought it was pretty entertaining, if somewhat predictable and you can't help but admire the digital effects. The Blu-Ray disc is pretty much going to be the reference quality disc for anyone wanting to show off their system, it boasts an absolutely staggeringly beauitful high def picture that's so vibrant and detailed it's a pleasure on the eye. The lossless DTS-DH Master audio is more than a match for the visuals, Pandora literally comes alive in your living room with varied and effective use of the whole surround set-up, crystal clear dialog, thunderous punchy action sequences and dynamic delivery of James Horner's score. #

So buy it then yes? Well, it depends.. If you absolutely can't wait to own it, then chances are you already have it. However if you're deliberating, and can wait a few months I would suggest holding fire because this release, believe it or not, in an absolute crime against home cinema releasing has NO EXTRAS. Yes that's right, ZERO, nada, zilch none. Not even an Avatar trailer, a 2 minute intro from james cameron, or even a flimsy Avatar coaster to stand your cuppa on.

But, of course, you know why... It's yet another massive title that distributors can dangle in front of you like a sizeable carrot while the film studio picks your back pocket. And then in 6 months time, oh yes, they will do it again..

I watched this series for the first time when I was 12 (back in 1989) and fell in love with it completely, because already then I was interested in history and especially world war II. I love the characters and the story! It's so incredibly well-made and I can't believe it's STILL not available at a reasonable price. It makes no sense to me at all considering that practically EVERY TV-show ever made (good AND bad) have been released on DVD the past few years. This is one of the GREAT ones. Pleeeaaase make it available!

It puzzles me why Amazon groups together irrelevant reviews - here from the DVD version and from the earlier Blu-ray edition - with reviews actually about this product. Well, never mind.

This is a review of the Blu-ray of Avatar, Extended Collector's Edition. First up, it must be said that the film is technically outstanding. The Blu-ray resolution, sound, and general immersion are practically second-to-none. Never mind Transformers 2 IMAX edition. Never mind other recent BD stunners. This is incredible stuff. Crisp. Colourful. Awesome fine detail. Etc. Etc. Absolutely 5-stars for picture and sound, without a doubt.

I've seen both the normal and two extended versions of the film. There are two separate versions here. One adds 8 minutes; the other 16 minutes. The additional material is great - and really adds to the story. Highly recommended if you've held back on getting Avatar so far. For an upgrade/double-dip though, it's probably the extra footage PLUS the extras that are of interest.

There's more material, really, than I have time to watch. I've watched about a quarter of what's on disc 2, and about the same of disc 3. I'm not going to run out of extra material any time soon, that's for sure! Most of what's there is great - although it does have a bit of a self-congratulatory tone to most of it. That's not really a problem, but just be forewarned. Everything is 'technical marvel'-this, 'breakthrough'-that, 'revolutionary'-do-da, and so on. Admittedly, what Cameron did with Avatar is breathtaking - from a purely technical standpoint. You also get an acute understanding of why the film cost so much - and took so long - to make after going through a sample of the extras, no doubt...

i think i must be going mad.
i read the discription of the DVD version of AVATAR & thought WOW i cant wait to get my hands on this little package.
Iwent out & bought this 2 day & thought whoever looks through these discs at AMAZON should have gone to SPECKSAVERS.
The 3 versions of this BRILLIANT film are actually split over the 1st 2 discs.
Thats the 1st half of each film on disc 1 & the 2nd half of each film on disc 2.
I'm sure this has been done for the max picture & sound quality & my god they look & sound supberb.
And on the 3rd disc are the extras butt knowhere near the amount that AMAZON seem to mention.
As i dont own the BLU-RAY version i have a funny feeling that the discription for the DVD that AMAZON have printed are for the BLU-RAY version.
