This is one of those strange hybrid westerns. It was a British produced Spaghetti western, that tried to cash in on the huge popularity of those films at that time. It was directed by Englishman Peter Collinson, who was better known for his cult classic "The Italian Job". As was often the case with spaghetti westerns, the starring role was played by an American actor, in this case Richard Crenna. His main support was provided by Irishman Stephen Boyd. Both actors had already appeared in westerns, Crenna in "Catlow" the year before, and Boyd in "The Bravados" with Gregory Peck. The lead actress was Italian born Rosanna Schiaffino. Quite a cosmopolitan crew to say the least.

The story concerns a man, played by Richard Crenna, who suffers a severe bout of amnesia after a shooting injury followed by a heavy fall. Piece by piece he begins to unravel past events. He is helped in this by outlaw Stephen Boyd, who may have his own reasons for becoming involved. It soon becomes obvious that Crenna is extremely adept with a gun in his hand, and it becomes increasingly likely that he is the legendary gunfighter Rubel Noon. But there are those that want him dead, and he is forced into violent action in pursuit of the truth. The facts are slowly unravelled, but our hero may find the truth hurts.

"The Man called Noon" was unsurprisingly the only western directed by Collinson, who died a few short years after its making at the young age of 44. The film is perhaps most notable for its imaginitive, eyecatching camera work. This zooms in on characters from behind and through a number of unusual objects, as if Collinson was using the film as an experiment. The impressive if somewhat unusual score by Luis Bacalov certainly gets your attention.

The Man Called Noon is a very good and very different Western. I was very surprised at just how much fun this film is. It's certainly inspired by the Spaghetti Westerns and in particular Once Upon a Time In The West but works better than most. This film has a very original plot and an unusual and stylish way of telling it, plus good score music and good casting that the film stands out as a very original movie despite its influences.
The DVD has very good picture and the sound is good. Unlike some DVDs I can believe this film has been remastered and restored.
