You will notice that most of the reviews for the silly but fondly remembered “Dead Heatl” are for the ‘DVD’. But if you want to upgrade to BLU RAY and you live in the UK - it poses a problem...

The American BLU RAY on Image Entertainment is REGION A LOCKED - so it won't play on our machines unless they're chipped to be 'all regions' (which few are). And at present (March 2014) there appears to be no European or Region B alternative.

Until it gets a release on this side of the pond - once again Region Coding restrictions deny fans the BLU RAY they want...

The film is not very good because it's various parts (comedy, buddy cop movie, horror...) are not integrated well into the storyline and with its lighthearted tone. Yes, the movie is funny but only in a small part, too bad the two deleted scenes weren't included in the original cut (especially the deathday party one).
Image is good a bit too grainy.

Yes it is cheezy in the extreme and yes it is full of lots of one liners that you and your mates come up with on a late night bender, but that is its charm; and the exploding undead of course. It is the story of two police officers who uncover a group of undead baddies bend on bringing their creator to... oh stuff it! The plot is silly and hugely entertaining, with special affects that you can do in your garage with some glue and tons of red cornstarch. I found it great fun when I was young and still find it a good one to put on when the lady friend is away and my friends come over for a few beers for an all night horror fest (or is that feast?).

I highly recommend it for a few laughs with friends over a few beers, but not for high browed evenings with any wine that cost you more than $2.50.

Have you ever watched a buddy cop movie and thought to yourself "You know what this needs? Zombies!" Well then, Dead Heat would be the perfect movie for you! This is an interesting little, sometimes-overlooked film that really brings innovation to the genre. Dead Heat is really just a fun and cheesy 80's comedy horror film starring both Treat Williams and Joe Piscopo. The story follows Los Angeles cops, Detectives Mortis (Treat Williams) and Bigelow (Joe Piscopo) who have come across something very odd; Criminals who refuse to go down from just a few measly bullets. The fact that the guys were already in the morgue once make for a particularly interesting case. The lawmen end up tracking the phenomenon back to a scientific facility that is harboring a dead-resurrecting machine and before they can dig too much deeper, the guys get in a shootout (one of many in the film) and fight with security and big zombies. During the scuffle, Mortis gets locked in a decompression chamber and is killed by a mysterious stranger. Despite the huge crime scene, Bigelow and their morgue attendant friend manage to sneak off and put Mortis' body in the machine and resurrect him. Zombie cop is born! From this point on, we get to deal with the whole good cop/dead cop thing and the hilarity ensues as the two try to get to the bottom of the case. We also have a cameo from Vincent Price (I think this was one of Vincent Price's last films too) which was quite interesting. Although the script was a bit mediocre, the action scenes, comedy and great fx compensates for what was lacking not to mention that Mortis and Bigelow were both likeable characters. With its combo of cheesy one-liners, insane (for 1988) action sequences, & truly remarkable f/x work by Steve Johnson, Dead Heat is just an overall fun experience that no horror fan should miss out, highly recommended.

Two cops, Mortis and Bigelow, are cruising around town when they hear of an armed robbery in progress over the police radio. When they get there and join the other officers, two masked criminals burst out and open fire on them. The police return fire and hit the criminals several times but the bullets don't seem to have much effect, eventually they manage to kill the two criminals. Mortis and Bigelow go to Dante Laboratories to follow a lead, whilst inside the building the two are attacked by a strange two faced man creature and Mortis is killed. Bigelow and Mortis' ex girlfriend who works as a coroner, discover a machine inside the lab that appears to reanimate the dead. Mortis' body is placed on the machine and his body is reanimated, but he only has 12 hours before his flesh rots away and he decomposes. Instead of trying to find a way to save himself, Mortis along with his reluctant partner Bigelow set out to find the people responsible.

Treat Williams and Joe Piscopo are clearly having a good time, which makes for a fun movie to watch. Williams is the more serious straight man in this, with Piscopo making several bad jokes and wisecracks. I'm not a big fan of Williams or Piscopo but I enjoyed their chemistry in this, I also enjoyed Williams in the hugely underrated Deep Rising which was one of the better creature features of the 90's. Lindsay Frost, Darren McGavin, Clare Kirkconnel and Robert Picardo in a small role all offer decent support. It's the inclusion of Vincent Price that was the real masterstroke in this, even though he isn't in the movie for all that long, he definitely gave the movie that little something extra and guaranteed the movie some fame and helped it to get it's cult status that it has today.
