“Christmas? What a load of old s**t!” When mean-spirited, two-faced, foulmouthed Nan welcomes the festive season with her usual mix of sweetness, sarcasm and expletives, she finds her late husband appearing to warn her of some impending visitors.

This hilarious update of Charles Dickens’ story unfolds after Nan has turned out the Cratchits, her relatives from Yorkshire (with their dog, Tiny Tim), on Christmas Eve and stolen the over-60 club’s lottery money. The Ghost of Christmas Past reveals just how horrible Nan was as a child and as a young wife, while the risotto-cooking, Armani-clad, Ghost of Christmas Present (David Tennant) and The Ghost of Christmas Future show the curmudgeonly old killjoy some home truths.
Will they be able to change Nan’s ways? Could there be a sweet old lady beneath that miserly exterior? Or will the ghosts get the same response as so many of the living: “What a f***!! liberty!”?

This is the one-off Christmas special from Catherine Tate that aired on Christmas Day 2009. Nan's Christmas Carol is a re-telling of the classic Dickens story with Nan as a Scrooge-like character. Naturally this isn't a faithful version of the story!

I don't want to give away too much because I think the joy of this version is discovering how cleverly Catherine Tate has incorporated all of Nan's personality and home life. David Tennant, Roger Lloyd Pack and Ben Miller play the ghosts with Madness making a special appearance. The Cratchits are represented by Nan's Northern nephew Bob and his family. Cue lots of Northern stereotypes which as a northerner I find hilarious! I'm not a fan of David Tennanat but his appearance is brilliant. They clearly have a good on-screen prescence together.

When watching the Catherine Tate series I've always found her sketches to be a bit samey/over long. However this programme is 50 minutes long and doesn't flag at all. Highly recommended and would make a great Christmas present.

I have always loved Catherine Tate's 'Nan' however this Christmas special surpasses anything she has done - Hilarious and i laughed the whole way through!

I'm french, and I only knew Catherine Tate for being a wonderful Donna Noble in the also wonderful "Doctor Who" series. Then I discovered this episode of her show, WITH subtitles for the hard of earing and the french hard of understanding cockney accent (and when searching films with english subtitles, I saw that a lot didn't have them ; and I thought that ALL films and series in all countries, should have these subtitles, because french people and other strangers can always make an effort to understand, but it's really unfair when impaired people can't enjoy a great film or series or show...)
"Nan's Christmas carol" is really excellent, so funny, so cleverly written and played ! I highly recomand this show to everybody : my daughters who are 10 and 6 don't understand english or only a bit, but they've understood all the show and love it...

I love the Catherine Tate Show, Nan is my favorite character, followed by Lauren.

The Christmas Carol story is an amazing tale for that season, and for me, Catherine Tate as Nan, does it Brilliantly, that I love to watch it on Christmas Eve as it makes me laugh and laugh. I hope Catherine Tate does some more shows soon for TV viewing, as it is a great comedy show.
