A group set out on a 'Haunted Swamp' tour, not realising it is only the
tour guide's second trip.
Disaster strikes when the boat runs a ground, the group have to get out
and walk, they are literally in the middle of nowhere, they need to find
their way back to civilisation.
'Mary-Beth' joined the tour because her father and brother had gone missing
a couple of nights back in that area, she tells the group about the legends
and story's, which doesn't help the morale.
They set off............they are lost in 'Victor Crawley's' territory.....things soon
take a turn for the worse.
There is plenty of blood, guts, gore throughout the movie, some character's in
this type of movie have 'victim' written all over them.
Some of the scenes put me in mind of 'Michael Myers' (Halloween)
I am reliably informed that this is almost certainly the weakest of the trilogy
however I'm told as some of the earlier reviewers say to understand the second
and third the first needs to be watched first, we shall see ?

the legend is born the first of a trio of hatchet films to match,jason and Freddie kruger.
in this first film a boat is taken on the louisianna swamps on marde gras by 8 people only to hit a rock and sink,lost in the swamps the quiet girl plays hell with the con artist boat driver and tells them about how hatchet got his name ,tormented by children his father went to he store to come back on Halloween to find children tormenting his deformed son and a fire is set .as hatchets father tries to break down the door with a hatchet (axe) not knowing hatchet is leaning against it to try and break out,his father accidentally hits hatchet in the face with the axe killing his boy and becomes a recluse for 10 years .dying heartbroken for what he had done to his son,but his son nicknamed hatched has return,calling for his father and tearing apart anyone he finds.
a really good film and so are 2 and 3 ,I recommend this.
WARNING; do not buy from dvds r us as they make slanderouse remarks to you

The Amazon review refers to the unrated version but the cover shows an 18 certificate, so what is it? I know that there's an uncertificated US release (84 minutes) and a German two disc set but this doesn't seem to be the Anchor Bay or Sunfilm version.

I would of thought that with some of the biggest names in the horror movie genre such as Robert Englund (Freddy Kruger), Kane Hodder (Jason Vorhees) and Tony Todd (Candyman), we would have been in for the best horror movie of all time with `Hatchet'. Unfortunately, these horror greats are only in this film for about a minute each (except Hodder who plays Crowley and his father)!? However, that doesn't stop this from being a very enjoyable and very silly comedy horror that is as ridiculous as it is entertaining.

The story is about a guy named Ben who's just been dumped by him long-term girlfriend so his friends take him to Mardi-Graas to take his mind off things. Ben however wants to check out a ghost tour at the local swamps that he has heard about. Ben and his friend then go on the tour but find out that the swamps are haunted by a deformed axe-wielding killer named Victor Crowley who will kill anyone who goes near his shack.

This is proper old-school horror that fans of films like Friday the 13th and Scream should absolutely love. The special effects are very impressive, if a little over the top. Victor Crowley is a great bad guy that can be genuinely quite scary at times. The story is fun. The script is cheesy and hilarious. The acting is intentionally bad and all the better for it! Overall this is a great slasher film that has been criminally over-looked and should be a cult classic in my opinion. Well worth a watch if you're into horrors that don't take themselves seriously in the slightest.

couldn't wait to see this film as have seen many others by the same maker of this film and they are brilliant!but got this film second hand so didn't pay much for it.

Sadly I went against my better judgement and purchased this film as I am a huge horror fan. Oh how I wish I paid more attention to the low reviews. The acting was terrible there were pointless boob flashing to try and keep the viewers interested and Victor was laughable. The ending was so abrupt I thought the dvd had stopped working until I saw the credits. I made it to the end in hope it would get better but it just got worse! Don't waste your time and money!

This is a reasonably good film if you want a few laughs and plenty of gore.

Some of the dialogue is obviously meant to be funny and some of the action is funny because its so unrealistic - buckets of blood, often literally thrown from off-screen!

It is quite inventive in the manner of the killings - not a typical slasher flick and was quite enjoyable but only 3 stars because several of the characters are very annoying. Mercedes McNabb was particularly iritating as another airhead bimbo (very similar to her character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and managed to stay alive far too long!!

A good choice if you want a light horror but hardened horror fans looking for realism and scares would probably be bored.
