The plot is straightforward, the climax predictable, it follows the path laid out by similar movies where the yuppie, rich kids who think they know the world clash with the wild but free psychopath, first bonding then turning to horror. So why is this film so interesting? Perhaps it's in the casting, a wild turn from Brad Pitt, dropping the pretty boy image for a raw performance and baring all (more on that later), or David Duchovny who like Agent Mulder hiding behind that white shirt and tie has always had a dark side threatening to come out. The film is directed in a dirty grimy way with some great shots such as a climax in a bleached out nuclear testing ground or Brad Pitt completely naked in the rain digging a massive grave. Juliette Lewis and Michelle Forbes are good but they are hardly acting against type and you have seen them do the same thing in other films. Special mention to the sets and locations, be they cheap diners, old industrial warehouses or old farm barns that were once the site of mass murder the walls ooze sleaze and create a threatening atmosphere. This is aided by the good directing, lighting and cinematography.
This is a film well worth a watch and though it begins to become tiresome near the end due to it's predictable structure and a running time that could have had 15 minutes trimmed off I would still recommend it.

This is a great thriller of a movie with top rate performances from all involved. My daughter gave me the nod towards this movie, & I'm so glad she did. Hardly, the usual road trip, when a writer & his partner advertise for a person, (or persons) to come along for the journey & share the expenses. There follows a thrilling & scary road trip for all. The film does well and probably takes from Bonnie & Clyde, Badlands & Thelma & Louise. Brad Pitt has never been so menacing. Great Thriller.

This is a very dark film in contrast to the bright sunshine of the cinematography. Everything is right about it. The Cinematography, the pace, the script, the casting, the scenery. There is shocking violence in the film, but it is about the relationship of four people in a restricted environment, one of whom is a serial killer. The violent scenes are necessary and not excessive. How Michelle Forbes is not doing more work is the great mystery of this film. Effectively the four main protagonists are the four leading actors. No one overacts and there are balanced performaces from all four. An overlooked gem.

Astonishingly, it took me twenty years to get around to watching this film. I remembered that a few friends had urged me to see it when it first came out, but then it seemed to fall off the radar. But I had definitely noticed how it regularly seemed to be included in advertising campaigns by the big retailers, so I figured it must have built up a strong fan-base.

The story concerns young urban intellectual photographer Brian (David Duchovny, just before TV series X-Files went massive) and his girlfriend Carrie (Michelle Forbes), who set off to drive to California via the US southern states visiting murder sites to take pictures and do research to maybe write a book. To help pay for the petrol, Brian advertises for companions to join them on the trip. Carrie has misgivings when she first meets Early Grayce (Brad Pitt) and his diner waitress girlfriend (Juliette Lewis), but Brian insists everything will be okay....

Struggling to find any common ground, the two couples share some awkward moments. Then Early's violent nature abruptly emerges, and the terrified Brian and Carrie realise they don't need to go very far to learn about ruthless killers, because they are already face-to-face with one. There are several outstanding and utterly convincing character performances in this film. Quite rightly it remains an 18 certificate (despite many other films having been re-classified during intervening years), since some of the violence is intensely unpleasant to watch or contemplate. Although there are a few scattered lighter moments throughout the film, they merely serve as preparation for the next nerve-shocking episode.

Back before David Duchovny became ‘Mulder’ in the X-files, he made this little film. Then again, many didn’t really see it as ‘his’ due to the fact that it also starred the highly-bankable Brad Pitt and Juliet Lewis. And for a reason, both of the established Hollywood A-listers stole every scene. However, that doesn’t mean that Duchovny didn’t play his part.

‘Pre-Mulder’ plays a writer who’s working on a book about serial killers with his photography girlfriend and they decide to go on a cross country drive, visiting the sites where infamous killers struck (ending in California – with a C!). But, to share the costs, they agree to bring along Brad Pitt and Juliet Lewis – another couple, but from a very different background. And it doesn’t take long before the two couples start to rub each up the wrong way – with some pretty fatal consequences.

It’s pretty hard to find a bad performance from any of the four stars. Pitt and Lewis naturally stand out because their characters are wilder and they have more to play with, but Duchovny is a sober ‘ying’ to Brad Pitt’s manic ‘yang.’

Basically, if you like road movies, dramas, serial killer films, or thrillers in general, you should watch this. It really is all those and more, plus it contains some pretty awesome scenery to really add to the ambience.
