Coming up with fresh ideas for a computer game is not an easy thing to do, so why bother? Instead take the base elements of the massively popular `Call of Duty' franchise and get the writer of `Red Dawn' to update his film and use that. This is how `Homefront' appears to have come about, homage to `CoD'; you play as a rebel American who refuses to be quelled by the invading Korean army. You must fight through the back gardens and shopping malls to seek freedom, justice and the American way.

`Homefront's strongest element is its world. Fighting amongst the picket fences of suburbia is slightly more original than most war games and the invasion story is well written. However, there is no hiding that this is a `CoD' clone, plain and simple. The use of action set pieces and mixing up of gameplay styles i.e. heavy first person shooting interspersed with plane levels, feels very familiar. The game also takes the linear feel of the `CoD' games and the apparent infinite number of enemies popping up stupidly from behind cover. Without any original form of gameplay it is up to the mechanics themselves to make the game worth playing.

Thankfully, in this respect `Homefront' is a solid shooter. The various weapons feel decent and the firing mechanics work well. The grenades and vehicles are not so well programmed, but seeing as the majority of the game is set on foot it is not a huge issue. There is also an additional problem that the game is short, coming in at between 4-6 hours depending on your skill. With a multiplayer game that is not as good as `CoD' or the `Battlefield' series it is unlikely that you will be playing the game for long. There are glimmers of a franchise that could get better here and a sequel must offer more in terms of game life, but at the moment `Homefront' is a passable, but fleeting experience.

Bought this when it first came out. I was disappointed at first, lots of bugs etc, but stayed with it and now after several patches I think is the best fps of its genre, out there on multiplayer.
I do have all the rest and Homefront simply gives the best multiplayer experience. New maps are due in July and recent patches have balanced the weapons and fixed alot of other problems.
Better Graphics than Bops, far better movement than MOH or BC2, no serial hackers of MW2 if you go on a good server, and far less lag than any of them. A game made for pc, not a console port. I can run my 12 buttoned Cataclysm mouse on this, no problem, which I can't on MOH or BC2. Absolutely recommended as it is now.

I was going to give this 3 stars, because despite its awful length and other significant problems, its not a bad game. Once the price drops to ~£10 its well worth picking up.

I'm giving it 2 stars because I'm in the middle of going through the game for a second time on Guerrilla difficulty (highest level of difficulty) and the checkpoint system is making me rage. I've died like 40 times in the same spot, which doesn't bother me so much, what bothers me is that for the past 30 deaths I've had to fight 5 minutes before I get to the part that I find challenging. The checkpoints are SO far apart and so badly placed (before cutscenes, before insta-death moments, before long character conversations) that they make me want to stop playing.

Several of the more awful placements: before you storm the store in chapter 3, you sit through a 40sec conversation. // Chapter 4 you have to run past a tank that instakills with its shells and machine guns at the same time.. // Chapter 5 once you've done the sniping bit in the tower you have to jump out of it over and over and over to get to the chopper (did this about 60 times before I got past it). I understand that this is a poor console port, but ffs, give us quick save!

There's a huge amount of bugs: weapons on the ground that have sights that don't show on the weapon models, toggle only ads/crouch (no hold to aim or hold to crouch ...), geometry bugs, checkpoint placement, character collision, bad collectables placement, areas of the map that you can enter that have nothing there, graphic glitches, scripted enemy events so enemies always know where you are, corrupt save file problems, HUGE AMOUNTS OF INVISIBLE WALLS.

That last one, huge amounts of invisible walls, is so true its laughable.

Title says it all really.

A bit like the Modern Warfare games this is an FPS with a constant "edge of your seat action" game play. An excellent game in my opinion but with a few flaws and it's those flaws that sadly and rightly deny it the high critical ratings it would otherwise have deserved.

On the plus side the game play is superb with nonstop in the thick of it action. The storyline is powerful and emotive with moments that will get the blood up and make you really feel like you're part of a resistance cell. There was one particularly nasty execution scene at the beginning that will stay with you throughout the rest of the game and will probably motivate you to fight hard and kill North Korean scum (no offence to any Koreans reading). The music is often well done and although it does sometimes get annoying mostly it comes in at the right moments. As an FPS it can really suck you in.

Unfortunately on the downside it is a steam game for a start, therefore requires a steam account to play (I have a hatred for steam). It is also painfully short with only about 5 hours of game play and that is its main let down. It ends just as the action really starts to heat up and you're left sat there wondering "is that it?". It wouldn't have killed THQ to add a few more hours to the game play. Also there was a particularly large download via steam that was required to play the game. Another of my irks with game companies is their tendency to release games without finishing them properly or putting extras on the disks and instead relying on customer downloads. Homefront falls into that category.

I notice some negative reviews have said the graphics are bad, I can't say that was a problem, they seemed good to me.
