Product Description

Misfit NYPD detectives Gamble and Hoitz (Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg) are sentenced to life behind the desk. They hate each other and the monotony of their meaningless jobs, as they’re forced to live in the shadow of the two biggest and most badass cops on the force (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson). But when those guys go down for the count, opportunity knocks for Gamble and Hoitz. Stumbling onto what could be one of the biggest crimes in years, can The Other Guys step up their game to solve the case without killing each other and destroying NYC in the process? From the director of Step Brothers and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

From Amazon.co.uk

Although the comedy team of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg does not sound like a threat to Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello, they conjure up consistent laughs in The Other Guys, yet another comedy from Talladega Nights director Adam McKay. Ferrell plays a mild-mannered police accountant partnered with Wahlberg's hothead (recently demoted to desk-jockey duty after shooting a very famous Yankee player during the World Series), and both men must endure the showboating fame of a pair of supercops (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson) in their New York City precinct house. Along with sending up cop-movie clichés, the movie basically exists to give Ferrell and Wahlberg room to work amusing variations on their characters (with grace notes for Michael Keaton's stereotypical tough captain, too). The loosey-goosey structure works especially well when Wahlberg is needling his partner's squareness or marveling, in wonderfully awestruck tones, at the unbelievable hot-i-tude of Ferrell's wife (Eva Mendes)--a discrepancy made all the more maddening because Ferrell seems indifferent to her charms. Throw in a plot about a billionaire Wall Street crook (Steve Coogan) and the revelation of Ferrell's hilariously dark past, and the movie finds a nice zone of silliness. Of course, any Will Ferrell vehicle must be judged by the opportunities for the star to launch into some borderline-surreal riff--and happily, this film comes through. From the moment Ferrell begins deconstructing Wahlberg's lion versus tuna metaphor, The Other Guys manages to find time for such nonsense, and the film--the world in general, for that matter--is the better for it. --Robert Horton

Will Ferrell finds himself a stable job as an accountant for the Police in The Other Guys where he teams up with stressed out cop Mark wahlberg. The back story to Ferrells character is so funny I don't want to spoil it here, it's one of Ferrells best moments. The Other Guys is brilliant for so many reasons, but ultimately the main reason is that it's totally hilarious. Will Ferrell has been in so many funny films now he must be just about beating comedy greats such as Steve Martin, Jim Carrey, and Bill Murry, and thank god Ferrell hasn't gone the family film route yet. This film stands as one of Ferrells best along side Step Brothers, Anchorman and Old School.
Also watching this film reminds you how great Michael Keaton is when given a good funny role. I'd love it if he was given a leading role in comedy films again like he did in the 80's and 90's with Nightshift, Beetlejuice, The Dream Team and Multiplicity. Maybe the next Ferrell film could star Keaton alongside him in some zany comedy, that would be amazing.
The Rock and Samuel L.Jackson are also superb in this film, it is insanely funny what they do. It's sick that it's so funny. There's also a very cool Ice T voice over that works brilliantly. Normally I hate voice over narration in films yet it works the way Ice T delivers it. Eva Mendes is also good casting and truly hot playing Ferrells wife in some funny scenes with Wahlberg drooling over her. It's good to see Steve Coogan get a good part in an American film and not only appearing briefly (as he did in Tropic Thunder before having an explosive exit).
This DVD is a shorter cut(12 rating) than the Blu-Ray edition(15 edition) with some altered scenes. I have seen both versions and can say that over all the shorter version is probaly the better watch as the pace is quicker.

I first watched this movie on a USA to UK flight, and even though the aeroplane environment meant that I was uncomfortably squeezed into a boxy seat and could hardly hear some parts of the film I STILL found it very funny! Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are an unusual pair to team up but it works; good to see Wahlberg doing some comedy. Also Micheal Keaton does a great turn as the Police Captain. A great parody of buddy cop movies!

The start of this film was very promising & funny, with Dwane Johnson(The Rock) & Samuel L. Jackon as a pair of ass kicking cops, Danson and Highsmith, who think they are invincible & too good to do paperwork. Meanwhile, Will Ferrell & Mark Wahlberg are the "other guys" in the shadows who sit in an office fighting to do their dirty paperwork. Wahlberg's character (a disgraced cop who was on the way to the big time) is climbing the walls for a chance to do some proper work after being dumped behind a desk, meanwhile his partner Ferrell (a police accountant) is content with office work, so Wahlberg's task is to shake things up & persuade him otherwise. However his attempts get kicked up a notch pretty quick, as 20 minutes in, super cops Danson and Highsmith amazingly through their "we cant die" attitude, in a superbly silly OTT way, get themselves killed. A perfect opportunity for the other guys to step up....

As you can tell there is a quality support cast here, along with Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton & Steve Coogan. However this film just doesn't fully click into gear for me, i loved Ferrell's other work like Anchorman, Land of the Lost, Old School & Step Brothers. But here the film is passable with some comedy highlights, but nowhere near as good as the previously mentioned films with Ferrell in.

Will Ferrell (Anchorman) and Mark Wahlberg (Shooter) play Detective Allen Gamble and Detective Terry Hoitz, the kind of guys that are instantly forgettable in an office. Overshadowed by the celebrity-status cops Danson & Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson & Samuel L Jackson) they fade into the background, but when Danson & Highsmith are killed in the line of duty, the lead detective spot opens up in the office and Gamble & Hoitz see an opportunity to prove themselves to everyone in the department and more importantly, themselves.

Wahlberg plays a fallen-from-grace cop demoted to partner Ferrell, who plays a desk-jockey seemingly unwilling to take any risks. Far from lacking the balls to get out there on the streets, Gamble is struggling to contain his wild and fearless, pimp-alterego and no longer trusts himself on the street and longs to get back home to his beautiful wife (Eva Mendes - Hitch). After pursuing a fairly minor scaffolding infraction the guys stumble into the largest financial scandal masterminded by Sir David Ershon (Steeve Coogan) but to bring him to justice will take everything they have...

The Other Guys is a great return to form for the comedy cop-movie, after some very poor submissions of late (
