The premise behind Slugs sounds ultra cheesy - mutated killer slugs. But it actually turns out to be quite fun and better than any regular "nature-run-amock" horror flick. I was expecting another god awfull cheesy, campy bug movie along the lines of Ticks or Skeeter. In other words, I didn't expect anything good at all, who would ever be scared of a slug? I mean, it is one of the slowest creatures in the world after all!. Imagine my surprise then, when I found that not only is this movie not that bad, but.... it is actually pretty damn entertaining and good! Actually, the best word to describe Slugs is FUN! Sure, it's pretty damn cheesy and the general idea is pretty laughable, but with the delivery, Slugs actually turned into a decent little horror movie. Not only that, but it does even manage to...ahem, get under your skin a bit. Plus, for those gore hounds out there, there's a ton of that as well.

Basically, a toxic waste dump has created monster slugs, but has been sealed off for years. Suddenly the giant mutated beasties find their way into the sewers and into people's homes. Now you may be asking "How can a slug hurt somebody?" Well, we find out soon enough that these guys have teeth, and in great numbers they're mean as hell! Hmm, slugs with teeth though... Wouldn't those pretty much be Leeches technically? Regardless, that's not even the tip of the iceberg with these guys. Watch for the business meeting scene to truly grasp the nightmare that is Slugs in all of its gory greatness! Absolutely horrifying, but awesome at the same time! The effects in this little movie are actually very impressive and well done.

Slugs part Spanish/American venture feels as though director Juan Piquer Simon rounded up at random a bunch of people and put this movie together. For to try and enjoy Slugs we first must get past two things: The APPALLING acting. It's a real stab in the dark as to who should take first prize- but I'll opt for the English scientist at the school lab. In fact he isn't English at all, he's been dubbed and is really Spanish like half the cast. His name by the look of him would be something like Rodney Smith- his real life name is the sexier sounding Santiago Alvarez and in Spain he has quite a healthy TV resume.

Our main character is fatally unlikable- he speaks to people like crap, even his wife but mostly it's the local sheriff, though the sheriff is probably the most spineless lawman in the history of movies. Our main hero is played awfully by Michael Garfield who after this had a 13 year gap in his career. One can only hope that he found drama school in between.

Slugs fails on many levels not least the dumbest script of the 80s perhaps. Where each line is spoonfeeding us just in case we didnt know what was going on. Oh and you'll hear "Ron Bell" many times (a character who gets killed off in the beginning of the movie), you'll also hear "Ive got an idea", many times.

If you're drunk it is possible to laugh at the acting and all round performances and kind of enjoy it all- and at least there is some very good gore moments here. The best one perhaps being the girl missing an eye as the slug crawls through the socket. But again the gore scenes are paced out and there are many killings where the camera simply pulls out and changes scene. Slugs still has just about that 80s charm, and because of nostalgia itsn't too bad.

I watched this last night.Where would we be without the good ole Horror Channel?
I really can't add much to the other reviews - they sum it up admirably. Suffice it to say that, if you enjoy
a well made creature feature from the 80s, complete with actors straight from the Woodentops School of Acting,
gory effects, and the Powers That Be refusing to admit that anything's wrong (Think Jaws, and a thousand others)
then this is for you.

I watched it expecting little, and got more than I expected!

In a small rural town, bodies are being discovered that appear to have been stripped of their flesh. Mike Brady, the local health inspector, is called in to help figure out what's happening. As usual in these films, his suggestion that it's man eating slugs is met with skepticism, that is until he contacts a slug expert and together they fight back.

The acting is rubbish in that fun B movie way. The dialogue is incredibly cheesy, but it amuses rather than irritates. The movie was filmed partly in America, partly in Spain. Several of the cast members are Spanish, the problem being that they're playing Americans. The actors in question have been dubbed and it's really obvious, but I felt it added to the charm and absurdity of it all.

The deaths get slightly repetitive, but how many ways can slugs kill? The effects are reasonable, I particularly enjoyed a very graphic, over the top scene in a restaurant. '80s movies were great, they were allowed to be cheesy, campy, fun, not all that good, and the filmmakers knew it. They revel in the stupidity of it all. Slugs was directed by Juan Piquer Simón, I think it's worth noting that he also directed Pieces in 1982, a hilariously brilliant slasher film. A lot of people adore Pieces including myself, so if you love that film, I'm sure you'll enjoy parts of Slugs.

Definitely for fans of movies like Basket Case, The Stuff, Return Of The Living Dead and Sleepaway Camp. As far as killer slug movies go, this is the best I've seen. Come to think of it, this may be the only one I've seen. It's not scary in the slightest, but it's undeniably fun. If you have a fondness of '80s horror movies that are more funny than creepy, Slugs is a good way to spend 90 minutes.
