Unsettling, and at times disturbing thriller from 1961 – do not let the negative reviews put you off! I’m not quite sure which film others have been watching, but I myself was riveted to this - a most unusual story.

Someone turns up from a woman's past. A string of strange events leads to lots of tension. The person causing the trouble is not seen until the end which makes it even more 'eerie'... My only criticism is that Cyril Shaps was probably too good-looking for the part - but then not all bad people are horrible and ugly as we tend to assume...

The ending - despite what others have said, I thought was pretty good and quite exciting and unexpected. This movie deals with an uncomfortable subject – particularly prevalent today. It also concentrates on fear and what it can do to an ordinary family trying to live their lives having put some awful events behind them.

A long forgotten gem.

Cheap isn't a word that really does justice to this 1961 British B-thriller, a kind of cut-price Cape Fear with Carry On Nurse's Susan Stephen as a loving housewife whose unhappy past as the abuse victim of her old orphanage's bush-dodging caretaker (Cyril Shaps) comes back to haunt her when he is released from prison. Veteran Hollywood supporting player John Ireland (Red River, Spartacus) is her husband, an apparently mild-mannered advertising executive who starts to get a bit annoyed when Shaps' prank phone calls and stock stalker tactics directed at Stephen cause him to take his eye off the ball at work, costing him a big promotion. Things come to a head when the nutter decides to get rid of Ireland once and for all...
Complete with a terrible musical score and several plot contrivances that require some serious suspension of disbelief, this Brian Clemens-scripted Danziger Productions time-waster is one of the worst of its bargain basement kind (and is typical of Pegasus Entertainment's Classic British Cinema collection, which is comprised solely of this sort of old toot). Clearly, the key plot driver being the sexual molestation of an under-age girl is what has earned this scrappy flick an otherwise totally unwarranted `12' certificate for its budget DVD release, and this element of the film is handled in an unfussy and straightforward manner; but one suspects this is more down to the extremely tight running time the movie had to clock in at rather than any attempts at subtlety on the part of Clemens or director Max Varnel. This really is one for the hard-core British B-movie completist; more casual film fans looking for a worthwhile `woman in peril' thriller with a similar pedigree would be better advised to track down a copy of Bryanston's Don't Talk to Strange Men (1962) instead.

This review contains spoiler elements.

You may, like me, be a fan of the seminal British TV series The Avengers and see Brian Clemens name as writer of this movie and think, well its cheap I'll have a look at it.

Do yourself a favour and don't bother.

It's almost topical with a tale of a creepy caretaker raping an underage girl at the orphanage at which he works...apart from the fact he's caught, convicted and serves a prison term. In real life if he'd committed that crime in 1961 they'd just about be getting around to convicting him now.

The victim moves on and makes a new life with her husband, who knows nothing of this until the rapist gets out of prison and decides to wreak revenge.

If the plot sounds somewhat pedestrian on paper, the execution is just as poor. It doesn't help that you're waiting for a twist that doesn't come. The contrivance of constantly filming the rapist from behind, so you never see his face, for the majority of the film makes you believe there might be some interesting reason for that (there isn't). You could be being led to it being a set up, given the coincidences that leave her husband's work colleague as the one who gets the all important promotion (it isn't - and the fact that the rapist magically manages to spook his victim just at the right time to curtail her husband's ambitions takes a huge leap of faith as it is).

Instead it leads to a somewhat straightforward denouement, albeit with a slight twist you'll see coming from TWO miles off. The acting is static, the plot full of contrivances and it's topped off with a horrible score that would be more suited to a romantic comedy than a thriller.

There simply isn't one thing about this to recommend.
