Generally speaking this blu ray is a decent upgrade from my old DVD, with a nice sharp colourful image.
However I noticed a jarring little fault, only 30 seconds into the film before the main credits there appears to be a bad splice from a close up of Michael Gough, giving a flash of black screen and a very brief glimpse of credits,this disrupts the opening scene.
I've checked and this error wasn't on my old (dark sky films) DVD.

Jason jones (played by 70's fave Robin askwith) is a bored rocker, fed up with the music scene in london and looking to get away from it all. In a magazine he comes across an advertisment for hairy holidays offering specially tailored holidays for the under 30's and heads over to the office to book himself a holiday. The company is run by the exceedingly camp Mr polloack (played by veteran of british horror dennis price, [...] I've put his imdb link beacuse he's been in a hell of a lot, including tower of evil, Hammers twins of evil and jean rollins vampyros lesbos to name but a few.) who seems to have a thing for Jason, so he quickly books the first thing that sounds right, a relaxing health spa in the english countryside. On the way there he meets Judy (vanessa shaw) and the two quickly hook up, things should go well for the young couple surely?!.
Well no... Firstly the films called Horror hospital which is enough of a clue to the audience something may be amiss, secondly the opening pre-credits scene showed us the spa's creepy owner Dr storm (played by the late great Michael gough) decapitating a blood soaked young couple trying to escape the hospital grounds in his custom car/murder weapon, so clearly something is up. Upon arrival the pair quickly discover that Dr storm has more plans for the young couple than a relaxing weekend away, namely turning them into the latest addition to his growing army of labotomised zombies!

Ok, first things first. THIS MOVIE IS CAMP, very camp, so camp infact it could start its own campsite singlehandedly. For some film fans this is clearly a good thing for others it aint, so be warned.Read more ›

Mansion, Mad doctor, Motorbikes, Murder most gory and wheelchair around a young couple - now where does one find this horror again later in the 1970's with catchy musical numbers ? Ah yes, The Rocky Horror Picture Show....!

DVD region code 1 H.H. is presented in anamorphic widescreen 1.66:1 and for standard definition video, looks fine, the Blu-ray is terrific

Jason, a disillusioned member of a pop group, decides he's had enough, and books himself a holiday at a country resort. On the train he meets a young girl, Judy, who is also going there to see her aunt, who runs the place. Once they arrive all is not what it appears. Judy's aunt is married to a mad doctor, who is conducting experiments on humans. There are loads of cliche's in this film, but it is just entertainment, and not to be taken seriously.

This review is for the French version from Artus, which is region 2, not to be confused with the region 1 release. Because it is region 2 it will play on any player in the U.K.
The original aspect ratio of this film was 1.85:1. The back cover is slightly confusing, as it reads 1.77 16/9 compatible 4/3, which is full screen. The film appears to be in 1.77:1. Which while it is in widescreen, is not the correct ratio. There is slight cut off to the sides noticeably at the beginning, on the titles. Given the age of this film (1973). Picture Quality is good, for the most part. Not pin sharp, but more than acceptable. Colours are natural.

If you have seen Psychomania, (see my review for that one). Which is another British horror film, from 1972 you will know what to expect. You either love or hate these type of films. If you like Pyschomania, you should enjoy this one.

You can also buy this either from amazon in France, or direct from Artus, which is the French dvd distributor.

Final word, this film has never been released on dvd, as far as I know in the U.K.

UPDATE:

After purchasing this film on blu ray, released by OEG, (which was released in the UK on 10th August 2015), I found that version to be far superior to the french release by Artus.Read more ›

This is the kinda thing that I usually like but even I admit that this is pretty crappy. A mad scientist Christian Storm (Michael Gough who must have been desperate for the money) runs a rural health clinic but instead of curing patients he lobotomises them turning them into unthinking zombies. Into this walk hippy musician Jason (Robin Askwith) and his girlfriend Judy (Vanessa Shaw) who he hooked up with in about five minutes and no, this isn't a 'Confessions' film. (I wish I had been around in 1973 if getting tail was that easy!) There follows several escapes and re-captures, more mad scientist shtick, a few prolonged beatings (that seem to last forever - you could make a brew, come back and they'd still be beating up Robin Askwith), a goon squad (dressed as motorcycle outriders) and the best bit, a Rolls Royce that decapitates people. The story has potential but it's done in such a cack-handed manner that the result is almost un-watchable. You can believe it was made in a few weeks and from the sound of it, with a half-written script. Some dialogue seems improvised (as were some of the scenes) while the rest is early 70's hippy-speak, maaaaaan. Poor old alky Dennis Price - it's the sort of rubbish that he had been reduced to. It's no wonder the British film industry was in such dire straits if it was making this stuff. The big laugh is it was made by 'Noteworthy Films', an adjective that certainly doesn't apply to this. Worth watching for Skip Martin and the lovely Vanessa Shaw but that's your lot. Save your money and get 'Tower of Evil' instead, an infinitely better horror also starring Askwith.
