Like most of the unfavourable reviews I've read here, I'm also speaking as a genuine Gervais/Merchant/Pilkington fan. However I'm not such a fanatic that I'll just laugh at anything because it's Ricky saying it.
This was woeful stuff. While large parts of 'Animals' and 'Politics' had me in stitches and left me with watery eyes and snot running out of my nose, the best I could say for this is that I smiled a few times.
It was already going badly downhill with 'Fame', but now I'm actually embarrassed on Ricky's behalf. He's turned into David Brent welcoming the Swindon lot by trying to be funny, and just making a complete prat of himself in the process. He now comes across as a multi, multi, multi, multi millionaire who simply doesn't care enough any more since he doesn't need the money and he knows people will come to his gigs anyway because he's been on the telly and in movies a lot.
Where before his routines were always un-PC and a bit shocking - but also very clever and funny, now he seems to be simply going for pure shock value. I'm sure you'll think of the line about drink driving and the granny (a gag lifted almost verbatim from one of the Derek and Clive albums BTW) He's now trying to be a cross between a shock comedian and a clever one who analyses his own show, but rather than taking the best from both genres he's taking the worse of both, and you end with with poorly constructed sick jokes done for their own sake, and then a little knowing nod and wink as if that's somehow supposed to make it hilarious. All the cleverness is gone, and with it the humour.

let me start of by saying that i am a massive fan of rickys i have gotten every dvd that he has put out but i wish i did not get this one because it was the same material just worded differently you know god and fat people its sort of a lazy attempt by ricky because he knows he will sell well so i dont think he cares really and he stole a joke from karl which i was kind off annoyed about so i would save your money on this one

That's about all I came away with in this totally laughter-free rant from Ricky Gervais. I used to be a big fan but this is about as funny as some drunken old fool down my local pub. In fact all it really did for me was reveal that Gervais is really not a very nice person at all.

Oh we've all heard him talk about how brilliant he is, and this was all said as part of a joke. And yes I used to laugh. Now though I'm starting to realise that this "parody" of being arrogant is really just an outlet for his real deap-seated arrogance. But if you want to fork out your hard-earned cash on a DVD telling you how brilliant and loaded the comedian is then knock yourself out.

And as to Susan Boyle. Of all the talentless Z-list celebrities out there why have a go at someone who can at least sing? And why pick on her because of her looks? This is where Gervais reveals his hypocrisy. He believes it's all right for us to make fun of fat people because "they did it to themselves" but wrong to make fun of gays because they were born that way. It's all down to choice according to Gervais. So what "choice" did Susan Boyle have? Did she choose to be a "mong" as Gervais describes her? And is it really acceptible for anyone, comedian or otherwise, to make fun of someone based on how they look? Personally I don't think it is.

But worse than that, far worse, Gervais commits the biggest sin of all in this DVD, the sin of being totally unfunny.

A really weak show, no real mention of science (printing off a definition of the term from wikipedia is exemplary of the laziness on display here). Early in the show, on a number of occasions, Karl Pilkington's jokes are recycled (no credit given). The audiences laughter is so often muted, the man's smugness (not believing in God and the Bible is fine- it doesn't make you superior and it shouldn't induce this much self satisfaction)and contempt for the weak (overweight people in particular) has become deeply unattractive- irony is a thin veil and it's wearing thinner. A lot of money, poor material.

Don't waste your money on this puerile offensive drivel. It is worth trying to borrow it just to see how low Gervais has gone. I was very surprised at his undisguised contempt for his audience and the unnecessary personal attacks on other people. His self-assured arrogance was once a hallmark of his previously obvious genius, but now he seems to have sold out, dumbed down and reverted to '70s style offensive blunder.
How embarrassing for him!

I consider myself a fan of Ricky Gervais, I bought all The Office dvd's and christmas specials plus all of the Extras dvd's. I've got all his other standup's on dvd, and I even bought all the podcasts. But this one I've got to say is really disappointing, he seems to have become really lazy when it comes to stand up, just intent on trying to make people laugh through shock as opposed to actually saying something funny, it all seems old hat now. At one point he even tells a story about how he got a present for christmas which was basically someone sending a goat to Africa on his behalf, this was infact a musing by karl Pilkington on his podcast. He must realise that fans of his will also have listened to his podcast/audiobook and know he's just either stolen lines from Karl or just churned out old material. It pains me to say it but this is probably the worst standup dvd I've seen in a long time.
