Product Description

Western starring Brock Peters as Benjie, a black Union soldier and former slave who returns to his southern hometown to discover that he is a free man in name only. His only friend is rancher Neal McMasters (Burl Ives), who offers him a half-share of his land. In need of help with the land, Benjie employs Native American White Feather (David Carradine) and his starving tribesmen. But violence erupts when local bigots launch a racially-motivated attack on the farm led by ex-Confederate soldier Kolby (Jack Palance).

Format: DVD
"The McMasters" certainly sounded an interesting film, and I watched it with some anticipation hoping it was a hidden gem. Unfortunately it is more of a curiosity than a gem. It is a film that contains nudity, in the shapely form of Nancy Kwan, some strong racist language, an unsavoury rape scene, and the usual shoot outs to be associated with a western. It bravely became one of the first films to have a serious look at the nature of racism. But what could have been a very powerful film is spoilt by some rather silly melodramatics, and a few over the top performances. This is a pity considering the talented and interesting cast the film boasts. Such ability could have been used to much greater effect.

In the film a black soldier, played by Brock Peters, returns to his home town in New Mexico at the end of the civil war, having fought on the side of the Union for rather obvious reasons. He is immediately ostracised in the town simply for being black, and for his Union allegiance in a town that sided with the Confederacy. Peters, an ex slave returns to his former owner, played by Burl Ives who generously gives him a plot of land. This causes hatred amongst the townspeople headed by one armed ex confederate soldier, played by Jack Palance. Peters faces hostility and violence, but is aided in his struggle by sympathetic Indians and a few townspeople. Things head to a fiery finale.

It was good to see Burl Ives in one of his later roles. He was certainly not too mobile, but still stole many of the scenes he was in. Brock Peters started off well, but then seemed to be afflicted by the curse of over the top acting, which was epidemic in the film. His performance gets more frenetic as the film wears on.

good story, and top actors i did not like the rape scene in the movie.the movie starts a bit slow, but then picks up after ten minutes or sow. i would have given it a three star rating, if jim brown was given the role of brock peters

A good old fashioned western, not frightened to confront the issues of racism towards black people and native Indians, the outcome was satisfyingly fair.

My reason for buying this movie that is being presented by Amazon is that I worked on it as the Unit Still Photographer many years ago when it was made......in New Mexico. I , of course have seen it before , and remembered it , but wanted to see it again and the actors , some who are gone now. Unlike what is being produced today , has very little , if any "special effects" compare to today , that is 85 percent.

HASH(0x984963d8) out of 5 stars Penetrating and difficult lesson of life 20 Jun. 2012

The men will be able to watch this easier than women. They could have left out the crude [sex-type] scene, yet they did it somewhat discretely (bit of leg skin except for too revealing at a bath time, yet still done discretely)[not meant for eyes and should not under 18]. Mainly that part was touching on the reality of violation of women. Like I stated, probably harder for women to watch.
--- It is a hard, but fairly good movie. I had to keep asking God's forgiveness on us as a people. Subject is: amidst prejudice and hatred after War Between the State [Civil War] a Negro soldier returns home to a white "guardian/father", [Burl Ives] and receives half the ranch from him. Some wonderful folk stick up for "Benjamin" and his valiant try at keeping a homeplace. Truly very bad guys do not want anyone but whites owning land. Benjie calls on the assistance of Native American Indians for running the ranch and keeping the very bad guys away.
--- It shows the decent side of the lesser amount of man to stick up for others on the right side, but has a good life lesson in all of it. If all of us could forgive, repent and gain reconciliation with the subject/ and type of this show, we would gain much from this movie. As I stated, it is a hard movie, with emotion, injustice, sadness (I kept praying, silly as it may sound, for someone to step in and help!) and VERY THOUGHT-PROVOKING words and action. I thought the acting was very good, excellent actors. Would have been hard to play any of the characters if one had any conscience at all. Worth watching, yet watch out for the crude scenes [:) avert your eyes a moment! :)] Even with the momentary crude scenes, a good lesson for youth to see what prejudice can cause, and take a stand against evil and stand up for a true godly, right side. (The reverend's commitment at the church was a bit on the weak side, yet mostly OK. A lesson there, also.) I appreciated the ones that took the right stand to help. And that the subject was put into movie form. A brave producer.

Interesting plot and storyline. Reflective of the time frame produced in the country post the 60s civil rights era. Movie also featured some well known supporting actors in various roles. Would buy or rent this movie again.
HASH(0x98496978) out of 5 stars Good Movie, Poor Copy 18 Mar. 2013

I enjoyed this movie a lot, since the post civil war era is my main subject of interest. But, this copy of the movie seems to be showing it's age. It is very contrasty and dark. That said, it is still worth watching, for the characters and the acting, as well as the story.
