Product Description

Jude Law and Forest Whitaker star in this dystopian sci-fi action thriller based on a novel by Eric Garcia. Supplying sophisticated and hugely expensive artificial organs to those in need, multinational company 'The Union' has a virtual monopoly on life and death. Unfortunately, for those who can't keep up the repayments, the firm's repo men are despatched to reclaim company property - no matter the consequences for the customer. After suffering a heart attack on the job, top repo man Remy (Law) wakes to find the company have fitted him with the latest heart replacement, along with a sizeable debt repayment. Unable to make the payments, and rapidly losing his taste for the job, Remy goes on the run, teaming up with his former wife Beth (Alice Braga) who is also fleeing the system. Now pursued by his former partner, Jake (Whitaker), Remy must utilise all the skills he possesses to turn the tables on his former employers.

Although not based on a Phillip K Dick story, this movie has many similarities - as you watch you will see elements of Blade Runner, Total Recall and also Equilibrium and Imposter. More than a nod to Logan's Run too. In the near future, after a war which has left some parts of US cities as devestated ruins and the new growth industry is human organ replacement by artificial implants. This is overseen by the "Union" who also arrange finance for the operations their customers require. More than a satirical nod to the sub-prime mortgage scandals of the late 00's as people find they are no longer able to make payments on the loan, along come the "Repo Men" to take the organs back, usually with fatal consequences.

Jude Law as Remy is one of the Union's top "repo-men" competing with his erstwhile friend and colleague, Jake played by Forest Whitaker. Unfortunately, following an accident with a defibrillator during a routine repo, Remy finds himself in need of an artificial heart. No longer able to carry out his duties, Remy soon finds he is a candidate for repossesion and goes on the run from Jake.

Part sci-fi, part satire and part chase movie what follows is entertaining in its own right. However what makes the movie is the twist right at the end, which will either have you shaking your fist at how they could do that or grinning at the new perspective with which you see some preceding events.

To say any more would spoil things but its another one of those movies that you'll watch second time around with a different perspective.

Blu-Ray PQ and sound very good, at least on the rental copy which formed the basis for this review.

The film tells the story of of desperate people agreeing to hyper-expensive 'organ replacement' that many of them have little or no hope of paying for......if they fall behind in their payment they will get a visit from 'the Repo-Men' who are paid to take back that which cannot be paid for.
'Remy' ( Jude Law ) and 'Jake' ( Forest Whitaker ) are two of the best in the business of reclaiming 'body-parts'
The two grew up together, and had previously served in the 'forces' together, they were work colegues and more importantly-friends.
'Remy's' wife did not like the work that her husband was doing, it caused a strain on their relationship, if he didn't quit, he'd be seperated from both his wife and son.
After substaining an injury in the line of work, 'Remy' wants to call it a day, however he too is in debt having signed up for his heart replacement.
Now, he to is on the run and links up with 'Beth' (Alice Braga) as they try to flee the oncoming 'repo-men'
What will happen now is that 'Jake' his long time friend is assigned the task of hunting them down ?
The film is different, i would say it does take a while to get going, however get-going it does and really it turns into a pretty good watch, better than many critics gave it credit for..
There are quite a few scenes to make you 'cringe' ---be warned.
'Jude law' acts his socks-off , a really good part for him, also a competent role from 'Forest Whitaker' who allmost allways gives a decent performance.
All in all, worth a spin.

In a future where synthetic organs can be built; there is no longer any need for organic transplants. However, with innovation comes cost and wherever there is cost, there is credit. When some of the recipients of these new organs cannot keep up with their repayments 'the Union' dispatches Repo men to reclaim what is legally theirs. Unfortunately for those who default, the ability to live without your prosthetic is of no concern to the Union; they do however, rather courteously, offer to call you an ambulance before removing your heart/lungs/spleen etc although if you cannot afford your organ, it's pretty unlikely you will be able to afford the lengthy stay in hospital or even the ambulance call-out fee.

Jude Law (Sleuth) plays Remy, one of the top Repo man for the Union, his partner Jake (Forest Whitaker - Panic Room) is a close number two. However when Remy has a change of heart (pun intended) he finds he can no longer continue reposessing Union property. He moves from Repos to Sales but the salary is nowhere close and he soon finds himself slipping behind on his payments...

Repo Men is ambitious in it's scope, some aspects of it feel like Gattaca (the heavily industrialised future and technological environ) however it is lacking any real moral substance. Jude Law's moral struggle with his employment feels wooden and far too drawn out, killing the phrenetic pace of the film established in the first half.

In the future humans have extended and improved our lives through highly sophisticated and expensive mechanical organs created by a company called "The Union".

The dark side of these medical breakthroughs is that if you don't pay your bill, "The Union" sends its highly skilled repo men to take back its property... with no concern for your comfort or survival.

Former soldier Remy is one of the best organ repo men in the business. But when he suffers a cardiac failure on the job, he awakens to find himself fitted with the company's top-of- the-line heart-replacement... as well as a hefty debt.

But a side effect of the procedure is that his heart's no longer in the job.....

Yep so the movie has ripped off other sci-fi classics, from total recall, to Brazil, but one cannot deny the intelligence and love that the makers of this film have put into it.

Law, as usual is great as the lead, questioning his own objectives once he gets his prosthesis, and forrest is always reliable as support.

It's a highly original movie, and yes, it doe's have connotations to some genetic opera, but the film is action packed, asks a lot of questions on the value of money, and most importantly, never gets boring.

Oldboy is riffed, Bladerunner is riffed, and numerous other genre movies are riffed too, but that is Hollywood for you.
