In the late 1960s and early 1970s British-born New Yorker and unsung hero of gay underground filmmaking Peter de Rome produced a number of explicit, painstakingly crafted Super 8 films each of which took the viewer on an immersive sexual journey. In 1973, eight of these films were brought together as The Erotic Films of Peter de Rome producing one of the finest cinematic examples of the intersection of artistry and eroticism, in the tradition of Andy Warhol and Kenneth Anger. Now released on DVD for the first time, these extraordinary films are accompainied by a new BFI documentary.

I saw these films at the BFI screening and can't wait to see them again! They were a totally fascinating experience: imaginative, varied, and very sexy! The blurring of boundaries between porn and art film was very fruitfully explored and the whole event was like the 70s underground all over again, or an evening at the Scala cinema! Two I particularly remember took place in New York: one a sexual encounter on a subway train, which felt so vivid and blatantly erotic, and the other, called Prometheus, an amazing fantasy based on the myth, which amounted to an orgy in an apartment set to the music of Scriabin of the same name. It was totally mind-blowing. I thought at the time that these shorts were too good to be true and that there would never be a chance to see them again, but after a couple of postponements it seems they are finally going to be released for a discerning public!

This is a marvellous grouping of short homoerotic films of Peter deRome. The potential purchaser need not fear about obtaining a DVD of this item in a format that an American or Canadian purchaser can view; there is another edition on Bijou Classics (C-2) that is of the North American DVD standard. This viewer loves all of the short gay films included. Each is different from its various companions; Peter de Rome fell into no cliché-mongering soever, whether of pre-existant or self-imitating devices or mannerisms. After all these intervening decades, de Rome`s cinema remains surprisingly fresh and original.

These films are wonderfully poetic as well as sensuously evocative. My own favourites are "Double Exposure", which constantly turns back on itself rather like a musical "crab" canon, and "Daydreams from a Crosstown Bus", reveries of a bus rider gazing desirously at at a young man, apparenly only somewhat younger than himself, on the street, who looks back at him with mounting sexual interest, eventually, as the rider has several very sexy fantasies about the lad, but, alas, the two fail to connect when the rider, who has debarked from the bus at the next stop, vainly runs back to where the younger man had been standing (perhaps waiting for another bus at the same stop).

Even the one sado-masochistic short film, "Prometheus", ends with tenderly exquisite finesse. After an abducted captive`s sadistic tormentors have departed, a naked young man, Greek-looking in physical type, arrives, one who rather resembles Cat Stevens (of musical "soft rock" fame, during that musician`s prime years as a recording artist).Read more ›

A collection of shorts..some very short. Revolutionary for their time, some edging towards not so soft porn although De Rome didn't see them like that. Best is the very first one being delicate and resonant.
