Decent effort. The period detail is good as is the acting, although Fanning is too conventionally pretty as Cherie, who looked more slutty, sexy and sleazy, but not pretty.Kristen Stewart however IS Joan Jett, really good casting, and the excellent Michael Shannon does a fine job as the alleged(by the band) sleazeball Kim Fowley. On the negative side, not enough is made of the other band members and I'd liked to have seen the band's first trip to Blighty documented-all we see is Joan making a DIY Sex Pistols t-shirt to the strains of Pretty Vacant, which hadn't been released when the girls first came over. All in all though,a good, solid rock movie and well worth checking out especially at the prices it's going for.

I must admit, I had my reservations about this movie when I had read that the dreaded Kirsten Stuart was going to be the one and only Joan Jett. However, after watching the movie, I feel my initial judgment may have been too harsh and found the movie an enjoyable mix of real truths about the music industry and quality acting talent. Dakota Fanning was amazing as usual and I am hard pressed to find anything negative about this movie.

This film begins well ; in fact the first one and a half hours are quite engaging , but eventually deteriorates into a sentimental mess . Although the Live sequences are good , and the depiction of the formation of the band is quite interesting , the film is ruined by the subtext , which basically depicts the Runaways as 'puppets and victims' of 'male exploitation' .
Although the film was directed by a woman , here , particularly in the depiction of Cherie Currie we find the convenient flipside of the 'feminist ideology ' ..... ie: that when something goes wrong women can always resort to the 'little girl lost' stereotype in order to shake off their own responsibility for their own choices and situation ; here we are shown a strong dichotomy between the 'goodies' ( the Runaways themselves ) and Kim Fowley the 'exploitaitive male baddie' who is depicted as 'puppet master' and manipulator of the 'poor naive young girls who don't know what they're getting into ' . Personally I find this depiction to be probably prejudicial and , more importantly , highly unbeliveable . It's fairly obvious that in real life the Runaways were hungry for fame and probably saw the industry insider , Kim Fowley , as a virtual 'meal ticket' ; but intstead of that we eventually see the usual 'sexual stereotyping' of male as 'villain' and females as ' victims' . I am left asking what the film makers are trying to tell me ...... that the 'Rock'nRoll' attitude of the 'first female rock band' was a FAKE ACT that they were somehow forced to adopt ?! This seems to represent a disappointing and probably innacurate 'volte-face' from a 'feminist movement' that originally set out to directly compete with males on their own terms .
So the Runaways never really believed in Rock'n'Roll ?

As a Runaways fan, I approached this with caution, even though I wanted to like it. It's a curiously -and interestingly -flat and low-key feature, perhaps reflecting budgetary restraints, perhaps indicating directorial intention. Maybe the makers wanted to show us that aside from the hype, The Runaways were a minor phenomenon in real terms. This comes across in the low-key and underdressed Japanese scences, which struggled to convince us of the impact the band had during their stint in Nippon. Strangely, it was this low-key quality that I enjoyed the most about the film, which I had initially imagined would be more romantic and ornate, in the manner of Todd Haynes' " Velvet Goldmine". Now had Todd directed it, it would have been a blast...

So maybe you're a Twilight fan and know nothing about The Runaways. Let's dispel some myths (some of which are created or suggested by this film) - they weren't the first all-girl rock band to play/write their own songs (but they were certainly the best early all-girl rock group), nor were they dominated by Currie and Jett (Lita Ford has probably sold more records than Jett, given her success as a soloist and collaborator in the world of heavy rock, plus she was a prime mover in The Runaways, while Sndy West used to take some lead vocals too), nor did they have a bassist called Robin (they had two bassists, first Jackie Foxx, who was ousted during the Japanese tour, then Vicki Blue, who came on board for the third studio album). There is other stuff suggested in the film, but the facts are different. And yes, they're IMPORTANT, since this film is supposedly a biopic.

Another great story from the decade where music peaked (yep, no arguments, the 70's). Beautifully shot in saturated colours (like the latter part of 'Auto Focus' - another retro film about the seedy seventies worth seeing).

The story is just the usual rock follies, but the Runaways were a cool band and their music is still good to play. They get well-served by some good acting from Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and best of all Michael Shannon. Hopefully it will inspire a new generation of girl bands better than the current batch. (Probably not, though.)

Never mind, enjoy the dvd anyway. See it in a double bill with 'Foxes', an Adrian Lyne film about the same time period, with Jody Foster and the real Cherie Currie. Buy some popcorn, buy some coke (cherry flavour).
