THE SLAYER is an effective chiller from the 1970's that was released by the well known VIPCO label that specialises in releasing cult and rare horror films.
This film has an interesting plot, the island setting creates a tense and chilling atmosphere and the killing scenes are handled very stylishly. Th main problem with this is the DVD transfer, it looks like it was cheaply transferred from an old VHS tape. The sound and picture quality is very poor which lets the film down.
It would be great to see Anchor Bay or Blue Underground give this gem of a movie the proper release it deserves!

The Slayer is an atmospheric, weatherbeaten sea-side bound, creepy flick with usual 80's atmospheric music. Occasional bursts of rampant violence caused several moral crusaders back in the heyday of vhs to take umbrage with this moderate imagery. However, its reliant more on the quality of stealth and mental deterioration of characters that are older than usual. Its a bit slow, but hey, lets forgive it for the neat bloody bits..

However, caveat emptor: its a VIPCO release. Which means the picture is ok sometimes when you least expect it, mostly falling down to VHS levels, with random light bleed at the right hand edge. In short, their usual hackneyed half hearted half-baked 'chuck it on disc shaped thing and pray' form of marketing. So don't expect to be impressed. In fact, the ratio is pretty indeterminate as the screen looks 4:3. Interesting film that holds up considering its limits, now made to look worse than it actually is with a cruddy release; the hallmark of Vipco and tatty VHS of a distant era.

A group of friends go on vacation to a secluded island, one of the women has been having dreams where her friends are being murdered by an unseen killer, but once on the island the killings start happening.

Decent enough 1981 slasher directed by JS Cardone. One has to wonder whether Wes Craven saw this before writing Nightmare On Elm Street as the dream aspect of both films are quite similar although Elm Street is a classic this films only memorable thing is it was once a video nasty. Never terrifying but it does build up a modicum of suspense and tension, the monster when it finally shows itself is also good and somewhat worth waiting for. The gore is decent enough, there's a good pitch fork killing & decapitation, acting is not bad either although Kendall the lead is probably the weakest link in the film. Big problem is pace though, the movie is only 86mins long but the first half drags on & on it does liven up in the second half but some will have given up by then.

Watchable little stalk'n'slash from the golden era, not the best but far from the worst, ust don't expect too much.

"The Slayer" is something of a curiosity for the horror lover in all of us. It's entertaining, the sets are creepy (an island with a deserted 1920's cinema, large ominous house, etc )and the gore is well done, which earned itself a spot on the original DPP Video Nasties list. Let me tell you though that the gore is not extremely intense in that it should be banned, but I must admit that the pitchfork murder was a quilty pleasure (a scene snipped from the original Vipco VHS release). I don't have the space to write a whole sypnosis of the film, but let me tell those of you horror-hounds who wan't to see it, I say: "A horror film from the 80's, uncut version, very atmospheric and good-gory fun". #Check the trailer on You Tube.
