Product Description

Death Trap tells the story of a deranged madman who uses the guests of his rundown hotel, not only to be victims for his demented thirst for blood, but also as food for the crocodile he keeps under the hotel.....Whilst "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was almost gore free and relied on music, atmosphere etc. Death Trap goes straight for the jugular and delivers the goods that "Texas" promised but never delivered.

A Texas redneck owns a rural motel by the lake, but when people come to stay he feeds tem to his pet crocodile.

One of the original two video nasties (along with Driller Killer) that were the first to be prosecuted in 1982 this is a rather strange if crazy horror picture. Director Tobe Hooper followed up his cult classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre with this bigger but not better film. A great cast came on board for this- Mel Ferrer, Stuart Whitman, Robert Englund, (Chainsaw's) Marilyn Burns and title star Neville Brand who gives a demented turn as Judd the motel owner, in fact the cast are actually not bad and possibly the best thing in the film. At first glance things look good but scratch the surface, as soon as someone raisers there voice its clear we're on a stage the echo is quite obvious, the croc well the less said about that the better. The lack of a plot is a major problem, Hooper tries with a sad attempt when family go looking for the 1st victim but it isn't handled well, there's no thrust to push it along like the rest of the film just a madman feeding his pet croc & it is not enough to keep you interested and you do start looking at the clock. The violence is strong and bloody at times but doesn't create any tension, although the menacing of a little girl does it may put some people off. Apart from the acting the only other thing that was good was the last 10-15 mins it picked up the pace and the ending was satisfying but it is a bit of a chore to get there.

It's hard to believe this was directed by the same man who made Texas Chainsaw Massacre a few years before, and would go on to make Poltergeist. Whereas 'Texas' had a gorgeous visual style and some intensely frightening moments of tension, and 'Poltergeist' had great characters and build-up, this has neither. As various characters arrive at a run-down motel, none of them think twice about staying even after they walk past a shoddily made mesh pen in which the freakish owner informs them there's a huge man-eating crocodile who'll 'eat anything! Anything! It's just in his nature!". Neither do any of them decide not to check in even when they're usually greeted by the weirdo owner yelling at somebody. As Judd, Neville Brand works hard to carry the movie, but he has almost no plot to serve, and no character arc. He just sits around mumbling things like: "Oh no sir! Not on my watch! I won't have it! I won't HAVE it!!!" This is almost the entirety of his dialogue for the whole movie, even when he's talking to people, and while it works to a degree, it becomes enormously tiresome and hard work to watch a film where a lot gets said but none of it actually means anything. The only thing that could be called a plot is the search of an ill older man and his daughter for their missing relative, a hooker who flees the local brothel at the start. Tobe Hooper also appears to be pushing the boat out by trying to portray as many of the characters as freakishly unlikeable and unstable as possible. Robert Englund's 'Buck' is a sexually sadistic nasty piece of work (although now I know where Tarantino got that great line for 'Kill Bill Part One'), the husband and wife who show up with their little daughter are seriously messed up, and Judd is utterly deranged.Read more ›
