Product Description

Supernatural thriller in which a young couple tries to rid their new house of unwanted guests. After moving into their new home in San Diego, Katie (Katie Featherson) and husband Micah (Micah Sloat) begin to hear strange noises and witness odd occurences. Believing that she's been followed by ghosts since she was a child, Katie is convinced that malevolent spirits have followed her to her new home. Receiving no help from a local psychic, Micah decides to try and get proof of the ghostly presence by installing a bank of cameras to record any manifestations. Now, as the couple try to make contact with the spirits with the aid of a Ouija board, their unwelcome guests decide to make their presence felt.

As probably almost everybody knows, this is a "found footage" film, about two young people who decide to document on tape their life in a supposedly haunted house. And I must say that I liked it a lot.

This film was made on a microscopic budget of 15.000 (yes, fifteen thousand) USD. Everything occurs inside just one house and its garden. There are only three actors, all totally unknown to me (and the third one appears only briefly). The soundtrack is for all practical purposes absent - and that actually is a good thing, as the mixture of silence and some white noise is in itself pretty creepy. Lights are mostly toned down (and a good thing too!) and the decorations are just those of a regular house. And yet, it ultimately made 300 million USD worldwide - and frankly, once you see it, you will understand why.

I am absolutely not saying anything about the plot, on purpose. Just be prepared to a long, very long and slow, very slow beginning - for those who do not like this kind of things, it is better to abstain from watching "Paranormal Activity". This beginning is however necessary, because the whole idea behind this movie was a long and slow escalation, a little like in Ravel's "Bolero". Another image I had in mind when watching "Paranormal Activity" was that of a lion slowly stalking its prey - it walks all the time very slowly but once it has got near enough, every next small step greatly diminishes prey's chances to survive - until the inevitable final leap, very brief but absolutely deadly...

Depending on your mood and on your personal taste, this is a film as easy to love as it is to hate. I personally liked it and my wife liked it too - albeit towards the end she tended to cover her face more and more with the blanket, until only one (wide open) eye was left to make peek-a-BOO...))) Maybe the best thing is just to watch it and make your own mind. Enjoy!

On paper this film had a lot of potential. What we should have got was a cross between The Amityville Horror and The Blair Witch Project. In the case of the former, a family experienced supernatural phenomena that became so bad they were forced to flee their home. They subsequently sold their story, but people were sceptical because there was no evidence.

Fast forward forty years. A young couple are experiencing some kind of paranormal activity so the bloke decides to buy a high quality camcorder in the hope of capturing some of the activity on film.

For me the scariest part of the film was when he set the camera up in the bedroom on the first night, so that it showed not only the couple in bed, but also looked out through the bedroom door, (which they always kept open), onto the landing. If some kind of apparition had appeared on the landing, or in the reflection when he was filming next to mirrors, then I'd have cr*pped myself.

Unfortunately, however, two things let the film down big time. Firstly, all of the supernatural phenomena that we experience consists either of noises, or of objects moving of their own volition. We never see any kind of apparition at all. Secondly, although young Americans might have been able to identify with this couple, speaking as a middle aged Brit, I found them neither believable, nor particularly likeable, especially the bloke who came across as a bit of an ****hole.

Admittedly, the last few seconds were quite shocking, but I'm afraid by then it was a case of way too little, way too late. A wasted opportunity.

Is this the scariest movie. Could be if viewed in the right atmosphere or not if not. If your one of those smart guy's who don't get scared by movies, and think the only scary movies are ones with psychotic undead cereal killers who trudges around aimlessly killing teenagers with big knifes and other pointy things, then this is not for you. I've noticed that fans of those types of movie tend to lack the imagination to appreciate the fear factor of something unseen lurking in the shadows that only comes out when you sleep or are in another room. Also if you watch with someone else, their presence gives you the moral support to dismiss any such fears and you can both laugh about it. But watch it alone, late at night with the lights out and no commercial brakes, just let your imagination run with it and it takes on a far more sinister quality far more subtle than your average slasher blood fest. But people don't seem to appreciate shadowy ghost stories anymore. It's all blood, guts, gore and monsters now. No one engages the imagination anymore. But if you are one of the remaining few who do, then wait till everyone's gone to bed, draw the curtains, turn out all the lights and settle down to watch it alone, then see weather you find it scary or not.
As a story it's a bit week and tends to drag on, but it's got it's moments and the ending comes with a punch to it, but how hard that punch hit's depends on your imaginations ability to accept the concept of the storyline.

This film sounded good but in reality was a pile of rubbish. We carried on watching it based on the logic that it must get better at some point right and even fast forwarded it to try to get to the good bit sooner. The only entertainment that we got from this was taking the mic out of how terrible it was and finding the most unrealistic and amusing things that might happen at any point. The only slightly scary bit was in the last few seconds but it really was too little too late as by that point we was already too far gone.
I really wanted to leave a rating of negative 5 stars but it wouldn't let me so just let this be a warning not to waste your time!
