Product Description

Product Description

Eli Roth's low-budget comedy-horror. Fresh out of college, Jeff, Karen, Paul, Marcy and Bert head up to a remote cabin for a weekend of alcohol-drenched sex and sunbathing. However, they are joined by an unwelcomed visitor, a tramp with a nasty skin virus. The friends decide to try and get rid of him and when he does eventually stumble away he falls into the local stream and contaminates the water. Having to use the water, the friends soon find themselves contaminated and discover that each one of them will stop at nothing to survive...

From Amazon.co.uk

A sneaky and surprisingly smart horror flick, Cabin Fever sets up all the clichés of its particular subgenre (what might be called the "sexy young people go into the woods" horror movie, featuring hostile redneck locals, dead animals on hooks, cars that suddenly stop running, and so on) and by the end has played a clever twist on every standard element, often to darkly comic effect. What's the plot? Well, five sexy young people (Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd, Joey Kern, Cerina Vincent, and James DeBello) go to an isolated cabin where they contract a nasty bacteria that eats their flesh; this, combined with a bad-tempered dog and a party-loving police deputy (Giuseppe Andrews, giving a particularly funny performance), leads everyone into confusion and bloody chaos. Some of the ironic twists are a little obvious, but most of them effectively subvert your expectations to entertaining effect. --Bret Fetzer --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Cabin Fever is the directing debut of Eli Rothi, who also co-writes and co-produces. It stars Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd, James DeBello, Cerina Vincent, Joey Kern & Jeff Hoffman. Plot sees a group of young college graduates rent a cabin out in the woods for party weekend but start to fall victim to a flesh eating virus.

Eli Roth has never been shy in coming forward, happy to be a self publicist and megaphone for hyperbole, he made some bold statements in the run up to the release of Cabin Fever. He had been bemoaning the lack of gore and nastiness in the current crop of horror film's, even venturing that horror should get back to the 80's style of The Evil Dead et al. With that in mind, Cabin Fever is a little disappointing in that it's not as outrageous as expected, but it's a nice touch having a virus as the cause for the horror, even if in reality the structure is cribbed from other more notable back-to-the-woods horror film's. However, where he does score bonus points is that his "fever" is double ended, it's not just the virus as a fever motif at work, but the fever of the group as well, their reactions to the infected and their fear of the disease itself. This allows Roth to slide in some grue and nudity as he dabbles in interesting fates for his characters.

Roth would make good on his "more blood " promise with his follow up to Cabin Fever, Hostel, and then top that with that film's sequel. It seems that Cabin Fever, with its modest budget, was merely the stepping stone that he needed. It made over $30 million in profit Worldwide, proof if ever it was needed, that horror is always a big money earner if done right. Cabin Fever did not live up to initial expectations, but it's still a bloody gooey good time for the discerning horror faithful. 6.5/10

Eli Roth is a very hit and miss director and star, Cabin fever however is by far his best piece of work, a great original horror with some crazy messed up ideas, certainly a throw back to the 80's without doubt which is a great idea as they were the best decade for ideas in horror and it certainly comes across with the way allot of the characters are portrayed, the story is basically and quite simply a group of young friends go to a cabin for a week for partying and drinking and sex, a cocktail of all the right ingredients for a horror, a mysterious virus starts to infect the locals and them and soon they turn on each other and an all out bloodbath forms with people dying in all types of gross ways, the effects are great, all practical gore and make-up effects and plenty of blood, the cast is all great, plenty of stereotypical dudes and hot babes and redneck locals of course, the movie does have a hint of dark humour to it too, if you love horror than this is begging to be in your collection.

Blu-ray looks great in HD, (Steelbook unrated edition and standard Blu-ray release)
Features include a making of 28-mins, commentary, short films plus more,
Region B, 98-mins, 2003.

This film is essentially following the first 5 rules in the cliche book of horror films.
Rule 1 - always have teen stars
Rule 2 - always be in the middle of nowhere
rule 3 - one couple, one will they/wont they couple and a comic charatcer
rule 4 - crazy locals (Pancakes!)
etc etc

It's a fun film, with some stupid parts, some that make no sense and some pretty tense moments. I enjoyed the fact that there wasn't too much gore within it. There's no torture, no executions, none of this gornography trend. It's a scary film, with some fairly gross moments and it kept me hooked.

Get this if you enjoy generic horror films that focus more on tension than torture.
Don't get this if you're squeemish, prefer graphic horror or like happy endings.

This is a decent movie, I don't know why it got so many 1 stars, the acting is alright(it could be better) its got a decent script although one scene is particularly weird (PANCAKES) lol! I think the writters should of told us how the man(henry) got the fever instead of silly scene like the pancake bit! I think its an alrite movie! I did watch cabin fever 2 before this one and I have to say this one is much better number 2 is boring and the acting is bad!

This film is for people who don't take movies too seriously, if you are able to have a laugh you could really enjoy this film. I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it before, it's not the goriest or scariest of films but its worth a watch.

Despite the fact he is surprisingly well known for a horror director, Eli Roth has actually only filmed three movies, Cabin Fever, Hostel and Hostel 2, none of which have particularly set the cinematic world alight. Still, it seems at least Tarantino is a fan of his style with Roth having directed segments of both Grindhouse and Inglourious Basterds. Cabin Fever was a mediocre debut that suffered from a rather mundane plot but it did have some great special effects which make it overall, worth a viewing. The cast isn't bad for the most part, Rider Strong, Cerina Vincent and Jordan Ladd all put in reasonable showings, but Joey Kern was dreadful as Jeff. There are some good attempts at dark humour thrown in for good measure but the film is standard horror fare and is too cliched to recommend more than a high-end rental. 3/5
