Product Description

The sixth instalment in the 'torture porn' horror franchise. Special Agent Strahm is dead and Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) has been exposed as Jigsaw's undisputed replacement. As the FBI start narrowing their search for Hoffman, he is driven to protect Jigsaw's legacy and initiates a new game plan in order to ensure Jigsaw's eminent design is recognised once and for all.

From Amazon.co.uk

The slightly disappointing commercial returns for Saw 6 may have been grabbing the headlines when the film made its cinematic bow in October 2009, yet this clouded another factor about the movie itself: that it was the best Saw feature for some time.

Granted, the film does have an overriding feel of business as usual, and Saw VI isn’t shy about tying itself close to the hallmarks of the series thus far. So we get no shortage of gore, a collection of new traps for the latest unsuspecting victims to do battle with, and the influence of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw still firmly felt.

In Saw VI though, it holds together a little better than we’ve been used to seeing. This time, we get Special Agent Stahm going up against Detective Hoffman, the latter of whom is very much trying to build on the legacy of Jigsaw. It’s not the deepest of premises, but it works, and the film ties in just enough plot intrigue to get you to the end. Plus, the set piece sequences work well, and while the editing style is still a little too fractious, the end result is a real improvement, and an effective horror movie. Inevitably, though, episode seven of the series is on the way…! --Jon Foster

So where were we at now then? Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is still continuing to do the bloody work of the dead John Kramer/Jigsaw (Tobin Bell). In his sights is William Easton (Peter Outerbridge), an unfeeling insurance head who turned down claims by Kramer and a myriad of others on pathetic technicalities. Cue more elaborate traps, painful decisions and some twisty devilment. Yep! It's another Saw movie.

Somewhat surprisingly, part 6 is a step up in quality of writing and ingenuity of gore/trap factors from the previous two installments. It's still very much old hat as a formula, and once again the sequences of Bell used in flashback show him to be the franchise's strength. However, the makers put at the core an insurance issue that everyone can identify with, whilst piling on mystery and suspense by way of Jigsaw's left envelopes and the FBI closing in on an increasingly overt confident Hoffman. 7/10

Special Agent Strahm is dead, and Detective Hoffman has emerged as the unchallenged successor to Jigsaw's legacy.

However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw's grand scheme is finally understood...

After IV and V being nothing more than average, the makers of the horror behemoth return with something that gets you thinking again, something that makes some sense as a standalone film, and is probably the most accessible Saw movie since II.

Keeping up with the times, John Kramer realises from beyond the grave that the credit crunch is a bad thing, and will affect people with health care issues. So he sends a fat cat on a game (the same fat cat who denied him something earlier) and all the while Hoffman has something to do with something, and there are flashbacks galore, but it does it's job with keeping up with the main narrative throughout.

there was a time not more than a couple of years ago when seeing the saw movies were becoming a bit of a chore. The public must of recognised this because of diminishing returns. But the trouble is, this is the kind of franchise that once you start watching it, you cannot ignore further instalments, regardless of how baffling or bizarre they have become.

Thankfully for once, the focus isn't on the traps (although they are good) the focus is on people again, and not how much they value their life, but how much they put a value on others (very topical).

For a fifth sequel in a horror franchise, the acting is good, and production values even better, and like i have said before, the story is an integral part to everything, and really makes it more enjoyable, as the flow is smooth.

Saw VI is a bit like walking into a favourite restaurant, having the waiter approach you and say "Would you like the menu?" and saying "No thanks, just bring me what I had last time...but I'm hungry, so more of it."
Since SAW 4, the series has been stuck in a bit of a structure rut. Saw, Saw 2 and Saw 3 all felt like very distinctive films. Saw was largely a police procedural set around the tale of 2 guys stuck in a room together. Saw 2 upped the ante with a house full of seemingly unconnected but terrified people roaming free and trying to solve riddles to escape. Saw 3 had a doctor and her husband trapped in a struggle to save Tobin Bell's Jigsaw killer AND face his tests. Saw 4 onwards has largely just been 'lots of people/ 1 person/ trapped in a remote location trying to work through a series of traps in the building while the Police try to figure out who's taken over Jigsaw's legacy.
Luckily Saw VI rises above the relative blandness of 4 and 5, with a stronger storyline and some good acting.
The opening shocker is brutal and nasty, and the plot makes smart, efficient sense.
While some of the traps may seem a bit underwhelming, the film makes up for them with a good turn from Peter Outerbridge. Costas Mandylor is decent as Hoffman, and Tobin Bell gets perhaps his best moments as John Kramer/Jigsaw in ages.
It's nasty, well made and satisfying, but it's a dish you've eaten before. If you can deal with that, it's worth getting.

With Special Agent Stahm (Scott Patterson) dead, the sinister Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) has emerged to carry on Jigsaw's murderous work. With the FBI drawing ever closer to maniacal Hoffman, the detective is cornered into setting yet another gruesome game in motion: a blood-drenched pursuit that will finally shed light on the really reasons behind Jigsaw's grand scheme.

This sixth instalment provides all of the graphic violence, imaginative and sick traps and some shocking twists, as you'd expect from the series and also gives a lot more background into Jigsaw's life and some of the reasons why he does what he does. Hoffman is more twisted and evil than ever, some characters return as well as new ones introduced. This is a good, entertaining horror that any fan of the series will love, however I did find that the new characters weren't all that great. For example, the unfortunates who are on the roundabout trap are in the film for, what - 30 seconds before meeting there possible demises, so I didn't really care one way or another who would live or die. Other than that, this is a great addition to the series, the gory special effects are excellent and truly stomach-turning, the story digs even deeper into the over plot of the six films (and leaves lots of loose ends for another sequel) and the action is as exciting as ever.

Overall, although this isn't the best in the series, if you've seen the other films then I definitely recommend watching this, if not though I imagine that this film won't make a lot of sense so you should go back to the brilliant start.
