The Third film in the Exorcist series and in my opinion the best of the bunch. If you expect to see another version of Exorcist I or a continuation of the god awful Exorcist II then you will be surprised but definitely NOT disappointed. Quite simply this is one of THE best Horror/Supernatural thrillers ever conceived. I know, high praise indeed, but well worthy of it. Written and directed by William Blatty the film is stylish, well paced and strings together plots from the first 2 films. The story is that of revenge by the entity/entities which were exorcised from Regan and Damien in the first film. A murderous rampage against friends and associations of Damien are subsequently investigated by an excellent performance by George C. Scott (Patton) who plays Lt Kinderman (played by Lee Cobb in the first film). Brad Dourif is simply superb as the 'Gemini' serial killer also possessing the body of Damien (Peter Miller). His psychotic raving and outbursts in the one on one cell scenes with Scott are mind blowing. This film is not for everyone, especially if you are expecting another version of The Exorcist I. It is a very intelligent film with an excellent script & dialogue combined with a pretty good plot supported by top notch performances. Watch and enjoy.

The rule of Hollywood series: the first movie is the best one, followed by inferior sequel, and then a third one which is guaranteed to be awful in every way.

But every rule has an exception, and one of those is "The Exorcist III: Legion," which thankfully ignores the ghastly "Exorcist II." We can thank William Peter Blatty (author of the original "Exorcist" novel) who wrote and directed this movie -- and between his vivid, clever writing and some truly haunting performances, it's a gloriously eerie horror movie. The one downside: a truly awful ending pasted on by the bloody studio.

World-weary Lieutenant William F. Kinderman (George C. Scott) is called in on a series of bizarre serial killers in Georgetown -- first a young boy is crucified, decapitated and has the head of a Christ statue placed on his neck, and then a priest is brutally murdered in a confessional. But the crimes strike home for Kinderman when his good friend, Father Dyer (Ed Flanders), is found in the hospital -- decapitated, with all his blood drained.

Certain trademarks of the brutal slayings line up with "The Gemini" (Brad Dourif), a serial killer from fifteen years ago. But there are two slight problems with this idea: the fingerprints are all from different people, and the Gemini was executed fifteen years ago. The key to this case may lie in a mysterious patient being held at the hospital, who recently came out of a catatonic state... and claims to be the Gemini Killer, possessing another man's body.

I suspect that "Exorcist III" would be more highly regarded if the title did not tie it to one of the most influential horror movies of all time.

Excellent film slightly spoilt by the re shot ending forced on the director by the studio at the last minute. But all in all about as close as were going to get to a true Exorcist sequel, so enjoy.

This film's connection to the original exorcist movie is flimsy. You could change very little and call it something else and no one would guess that it had any link to the original.

It is very different to the Exorcist. Gone are the Catholic theological musings concerning the nature of evil. In its place a taut thriller made extraordinary by breathtaking acting and directing.

A better comparison is with The Silence of the Lambs, and it stacks up very well against that movie.

It has some truly scary moments including a horrific murder in the confessional, a surreal dream sequence and a nurse on her way to decapitate a patient.

Its only failing is the unecessary inclusion of an actual exorcism which adds little except a superfluous character and a token nod to the movie's title.

If you like intelligent horror - see it.

This film is far better than you might expect. It seems a shame that the film didn't share the title of the book on which it was based, 'Legion'; the present title brings to mind the countless abysmal horror sequels swamping the genre, an association this movie does not deserve.
'Exorcist III' is written and directed by William Peter Blatty, writer of the original film and of the fantastic yet sadly underrated cult classic 'The Ninth Configuration'. Unlike 'Exorcist II' (which was not penned by Blatty), the plot does not revolve around Regan, the little girl possessed in the first film. Instead, it involves the investigations of Lt. Kinderman (played by Lee J. Cobb in the first film, here played by George C. Scott). He is looking into a series of grisly, ritualistic murders which appear to be linked to a psychotic mental patient with a striking resemblance to Damien Karras, the tormented priest who played a central role in the first film (played again here by Jason Miller).
The plot is complex and intelligent - its links to the original are ingenious and moving, returning faithfully to characters from the first film. Because of this aspect, it certainly helps to be familiar with the original.
The only false note is struck by the film's most explicit link to the first two movies - the eventual exorcism. It simply doesn't seem necessary, with the priest played by Nicol Williamson a largely redundant character. It is rumoured that the studio forced Blatty to include an exorcism scene - if this is the case, it certainly shows, as the climax of the movie seems a little messy and rushed, compared with what went before.
Overall it's a 7/10 movie (as it's out of five for amazon I've been generous with the mark)- an unexpectedly clever, witty, and in places terrifying treat, and well worth a look, in spite of the flaws.
