Product Description

Something is killing the homeless of New York city by melting them. Two brothers and a maverick cop set out to stop the ruthless gang behind the killings.

From Amazon.co.uk

Sure, Street Trash has a convoluted, ridiculous plot, but it also features bums who melt into rainbow sludge upon drinking a fermented relative of Thunderbird, Tenafly Viper. In this '80s B-movie akin to The Toxic Avenger or C.H.U.D., Fred (Mike Lackey) is the main homeless guy who distributes Viper he's lifted from the local liquor store. Once he discovers the alcohol's lethal potential, he wields it as a weapon, eventually fighting head criminal, Bronson, a psycho-killer Vietnam vet who carries a human femur bone handle knife. Side plots, such as one involving a begrudging policeman who seeks to clean up the Street Trash community housed in a junkyard, or the one featuring Wendy, the hot girl who guards runaways from the junkyard's fat, mean owner, are beside the point. Watch Street Trash for its infamous penis scene, in which a member is chopped off and tossed around in a game of keep away, or watch the film to see a man melt down into a blue pile as he's flushed down a toilet bowl. Street Trash's gore isn't so disturbing as it is comic, as are the bums' New Romantic costumes similar to Dexy's Midnight Runners in the video for their '80s hit, "Come On Eileen." Applaud Street Trash for its gaudy, horrendous splendor. Notably, this re-release contains the original Super-8 short of the film, featuring even more homemade special effects and low-grade humor.--Trinie Dalton --This text refers to an alternate DVD edition.

I first saw Street Trash in the late 80s on vhs - and the memory of this long-buried little gem of a movie remained with me for a very long time . . . . until it became available on a reg 1 American import. I had a multi-region dvd player at the time, so it was great to re-discover this treasure. And now available on region free bluray . . . . well, what more could I ask? A very very good transfer from the original movie, excellent sound and a whole shed-load of extras including a very watchable 2hour documentary with nearly everyone involved, then and now.
If you know Street Trash, then you will understand what I mean when I say that this really is a quintessential 80s comedy/horror/thriller/social satire. The fx are pretty good for their time, has to be said, and parts of the film are very dark indeed. A blend of contemporary New York's underbelly with dream/flashback sequences in Vietnam are all handled skillfully and at times sympathetically. The dialogue is snappy, comedic and very un-pc. The characters all look, for the most part, like down and outs, alcoholics, the dregs of society that inhabit this twilight world, usually through no fault of their own. The actor Bill Chepil, who plays the part of the cop, was a real life NY cop before this, and brings a gritty reality to the role. Vic noto, who is the leader of this rag-tag bunch who live in a car-wrecker's yard, is horribly believable as a deeply disturbed ex-Vietnam vet.
Anyway - the basic plot is: owner of a low-rent booze store discovers a cache of 40/50 year old bottles of hooch called Viper - which, when drunk, makes the drinker, well, melt in a multi-hued way! Sold unknowingly for $1 a bottle, havoc and chaos rule the bums' world. There are several sub-plots going on, which all gel nicely as the movie progresses.

I have waited a long time to own this awesome film, but I never imagined that when the day came for it to be re-released, it would be given this sort of treatment! As with other recent Arrow releases, you get a nifty white box, a flip-cover (new art and original cover), a poster and an interview booklet.

The film is pretty much in the mid-80s Troma vein, though I rate it higher than any Troma film as the comedy is less spoof and the gore and acting is more accomplished. There are real characters in this film; notably the vietnam-vet king of the junkyard and the hard as nails detective assigned to the melting-tramps case and it is performances like these which really push the film into classic status.

Madness all round; the story concerns a batch of mysterious and highly toxic liquor being discovered in the basement of an off-licence which the owner decides to sell for $1 a bottle. Of course, this appeals to the local down-and-out community, resulting in a spate of gruesome deaths. This is just the foundation for the real plot (I say plot, but you know...) to be built upon, one which involves goodies, baddies and sleazeballs trying to operate alongside each other. Of course, it is all in the worst possible taste and I heartily recommend this specific version to anyone that enjoys this particular sub-genre.

This is probably one of the top 10 splatter movies of the 80's as there is so many cool blood and gore effects and crazy oozing splatter moments to satisfy any fan of this horror genre, this movie is a little more unusual in that there's not much of a storyline, its basically about a couple of homeless brothers that live in an auto wrecking yard, life is hard as they try to survive each day stealing to eat and drink and fighting and murdering among fellow homeless etc, and if things were not bad enough a local off-licence owner finds a really old batch of wine hidden behind a panel in the basement of the shop called viper, its very old and very bad, so bad anyone that drinks it becomes a melting blob of gore! It has a good sense of humour too and is a very stand alone and original 80's movie that's really worth adding to the collection for sure, you cant knock it for cult classic bloody gory splatter practical effects they are top notch all the way, amusing cast, good soundtrack, for a low budget movie at the time its a gem by todays standards!!

Blu-ray looks fantastic in HD (Synapse films import)
Tons of great special features including a 2hr documentary, 2 commentaries, original short film, deleted scenes, trailers and more!!
Region Free ABC, 102-mins, 1987.
Comes with a free bonus Viper wine bottle sticker.

When a liquor store owner finds a case of "Viper" in his cellar, he decides to sell it to the local hobos at one dollar a bottle, unaware of its true properties.

The drinks causes its consumers to melt, very messily.

Two homeless lads find themselves up against the effects of the toxic brew, as well as going head to head with Bronson, a Vietnam vet with sociopath tendencies, and the owner of the junkyard they live in....

The thing is with this film is that although it's got a huge cult following, and does feature some really cool money shots, some of the sub-plots are just a little too bizarre to make any sense in a film like this.

Take the Duran sub-plot. Was it really necessary to have him sing a song at the end? I mean it's funny, but his character really didn't need such an extended role, and it ruined the flow of the film.

I know it's cheaply made, but some of the acting is hideous, and the inclusion of Bronsons Vietnam dreams look too cheap.

Other than that, it's a fun film, effects are amazing, especially the first melt scene, and Bronsons death. It's funny, with some inventive scenes, and it's really a shame that a lot of the cast and crew only did this.

Worth catching if you can.
