Synopsis

BORAT trickster Sacha Baron Cohen returns to the big screen to offer yet another stinging dose of socio-political satire in this comedy that finds him assuming the persona of gay fashionmonger Bruno, the self-proclaimed 'voice of Austrian youth TV'. Originally conceived as part of Baron Cohen's cult television series DA ALI G SHOW, the character of Bruno offered a cleverly costumed Baron Cohen the opportunity to highlight the absurdities of the fashion industry by interviewing unsuspecting fashion icons and other haute couture hangers-on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't watch it on a plane, 10 Nov 2009
By R. Lovegrove "hello_girl" (london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bruno [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
13 hr flight from Shanghai to Heathrow, I thought I'd choose Bruno from the menu of films to watch on my personal screen. Trouble is when it started there was plenty of Willies and "bottom action" and I was looking sideways at the elderly gentleman on my right to make sure he wasn't looking at my screen. It's not smomething you'd want to watch with your parents or any elderly person.

However, it's hilarious. I tried so hard not to laugh out loud because I didn't want the old man to divert his attention to my screen. In the end I tried so hard not to laugh that I started making snorting noises and tears wre coming down my face. It is VERY funny and yes, in parts he does go a bit far with the "sausage jockey" antics. The bit where he asks the mother of an aspiring baby actor whether she would be able to reduce the baby's weight from 30kg to 20kg for the shoot. She agreed and then he asked whether she would be prepared for the baby to have lipo-suction if she had not achieved this weight loss "If that's what it takes, yes" She said. Unebelievable and that's why it's worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a film true to the original character, 16 Nov 2009
By Mr. Blu (Europe) - See all my reviews
After watering down Ali G and Borat for American tastes, Sacha Baron Cohen finally turns out a movie where the character is always just as outrageous as in the original series. And this is his original character: back in the 90s when I wanted to show my nephew this 'new' comedian on "The 11 O'Clock Show" he said, 'Oh yeah, that's the guy who used to play a gay, Austrian fashionista on some satellite channel!"

This film is very funny, very vulgar (those scenes being the least funny, he could have cut this 18 certificate film down to a 12 without losing that many laughs) and very short on the boring bits that crept into the two earlier films seemingly due to a lack of material.

Witness Bruno tell a room full of "African-Americans" (a term he will play with beautifully) how he acquired his adopted son O.J. by swapping him for an I-pod! Witness Bruno trying to become straight by attending a swinger party and requesting that the woman who has taken a shine to him don a beard because it will be more "erotic". This film is not very clever, and it is certainly not grown up, but it still manages to earn a few satire stripes: more successfully with people's attitude to and appetite for fame (through their children) than with any gay issues.

As a Blu-Ray the film ticks all the right boxes regarding audio and video quality without being shot in a way that really allows you to appreciate the extra sharpness. Saying that this film would be OK on DVD too is not really a swipe at the transfer, just being realistic about the lack of showcase scenes.

Good old Sacha is maybe out of characters now, but if so he is going out with a bang, and his original character was right: after those questions to the parents about 'amateur science' and suggested costumed poses for children, I am indeed now all, like, Adolf who?

4.0 out of 5 stars Shocking, but not for the reasons you might expect, 10 Nov 2009
By Jack "sevagram" (England) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Bruno [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
In equal mesasures screamingly funny and toe-curlingly embarrassing, Bruno perhaps takes Sacha Baron Cohen's shock tactics as far as they can go and one might argue that at times he almost goes too far (the baby photos, for instance - but my God, they're funny!), but it has to be said that nothing can match the truly shocking and disturbing levels of homophobia that his characters encounter during this film. There are some very scary people in this movie, but Bruno isn't one of them, and one has to admire Cohen's bravery. Definitely worth a look, but be ready to gasp in horror and disbelief in between the laughs!
