In 'Invitation To Hell', Jacky(Becky Simpson) visits her friends Laura and Ed and is surprised to find herself at a masked ball. Even worse is to follow as she finds herself the unwilling participant in a pagan ritual and she soon finds herself trapped in a situation she cannot escape from, surrounded by people she can't trust.
'The Last Night' concerns a group of amateur thespians acting out the final performance of Murder In The Dark. However, life is soon imitating art as a duo of escaped psychopaths arrive at the theatre and start to murder the unsuspecting actors one by one.
What more could you ask for? A couple of criminally neglected low budget horrors have been brought together for this special edition, just like director Murphy always envisioned.
So what's so good about Invitation To Hell? Well certainly not the acting which is pretty terrible all round, though Becky Simpson gives a very vocal, full blooded performance. The picture quality is pretty poor too, but it's the best we're going to get, as Murphy states in the extras. The plot is both threadbare and incomprehensible.
It sort of reminds me of Lucio Fulci's City Of The Living Dead, that is if Fulci had shot it on 16mm camera, on a budget of peanuts, and had relocated to a farmhouse in the wilds of Devon. Despite, or perhaps because of, all its limitations and incongruities, Invitation To Hell is very enjoyable. There is a great Synthesiser score underpinning all the action, the lack of budget gives the whole affair an almost dreamlike quality and there's also a rousing climax with a demon reborn of fire. Oh, and the special effects are pretty good too. If the acting had been as good it would have been a difficult watch. The biggest question remains just what is going on between Maurice and Alan?
