Product Description

Director F. Gary Gray's cut of the comedy film starring Ice Cube. The film follows the lives of two friends growing up in South Central LA. Craig (Ice Cube) has been fired from his job and is in danger of being kicked out of his house by his parents. Smokey (Chris Tucker) is in love with a fitness instructor, a fact that drives his girlfriend into fits of jealousy. Together they are in trouble with the local drug dealer, who threatens to shoot them if they don't pay the $200 they owe him by 10pm. With all that to sort out, it's sure to be one hectic Friday.

From Amazon.co.uk

Friday is the rarest specimen of African American cinema: a hood movie refreshingly free of the semi-seriousness and moralism of shoot-'em-up soaps such as Boyz N the Hood, yet still true to the inner-city experience. Scripted by rapper Ice Cube, Friday is a no-frills tale of a typical day in the life of a pair of African American youth in South Central. Cube plays Craig, a frustrated teen who endures the ultimate humiliation: getting fired on his day off. Then unknown Chris Tucker plays Smokey, a marijuana-worshipping homeboy whose love for the green stuff lands him in predicament after predicament. Sitting on the stoop of Craig's rundown home, the two hilariously confront a kaleidoscopic array of gangbangers, weed dealers, crack heads, prostitutes, scheming girlfriends and neighbourhood bullies--all of whom, it should be noted, come off as sympathetic even as they are being caricatured, a true achievement in the crass, "booty call" environment of 1990s African American comedy. --Ethan Brown, Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This film describes what its like for 2 teenagers growing up in south central L.A... Craig (Ice Cube) has been fired on his day off and his weed crazy friend Smokey (Chris Tucker) intends on getting Craig high for the first time. But Smokey has troubles of his own, he has to find a way to get $200 to pay off a drug dealer.
There is everything you want in this film... action, comedy & a good storyline.
A must buy for anyone who likes movies in this category.
Smokey was an excellent charachter providing laughter throughout the film and it was very dissapointing that he didnt appear in the sequel Next Friday...

This film is a excellent portrayal of life eleven years ago in America. Not only does this film have laughter, punch-lines and memorable characters but a meaning and a resemblance of life back then and a similarity with life even today. I first watched this film in 2001 at the tender age of 13, I remember watching it with my older brother and really enjoying it. The main basis of the film has already been commented on through many other reviews, so I will keep it short. The film follows Craig (Ice Cube) on a Friday and shows the obstacles that he faces. This must have some meaning as it started Chris Tucker's career and he is phenomenal in this. I feel the following two films could have been so much better if he was included in them but Chris Tucker decided against Friday 2 to get paid $25 Million for RushHour Two instead. In conclusion, this film must be watched by anyone who considers themselves a "Gangsta" and really anyone who enjoys "Rap" which is nearly every teenager now, as this film has many Rap based songs and is hugely enjoyable to most.

I would give this film 5 stars, but the Blu-ray knocks a couple of stars off.

The Blu-ray gives us the Director's cut, which adds a few minutes footage, which in my opinion ruins the flow of some of the films best funny scenes. I would have preferred the option of watching both cuts.
The extras are pretty much the same as on the Dvd's before, which is a let-down too.

The picture quality is at times below average, and other times really nice. The opening panning shot over the neighbourhood looks like standard definition, as do many shots throughout the film, but mostly it looks good, especially the exteriors.

The sound surprisingly has a new 5.1 mix, or an optional 7.1 mix which I didn't expect.

My region 1 Dvd upscales exceptionally well, and because of that I kind of wish I hadn't bothered buying this and I actually prefer the original cut of the film.

I would still recommend it if you're a fan, especially at the low price, but don't expect to be too impressed.

Friday to me is still one of the coolest movies made in the 90's. They don't make clever, original character comedy like this anymore. It's just a simple premise: a day in the life of 2 guys in the hood. But in there they get all the archetypes from the down-girl next door, to the hoochie mama, to the really pretty girl with the bad attitude, the clown on the block that makes everyone laugh- the bully on the block, the uptight annoying neighbour, the "crackhead" (or something similar),the annoying little kid down the street...Plus I LOVE the 90s West Coast flavour with the big braids and the daisy dukes and little tank tops, chillin on your porch smoking a joint watching the world go by. Hot soundtrack too...

This movie is hilarious! As far as comedies go about the hood, this one is hands down the best. Chris Tucker and Ice Cube really mix up nicely in this one. This is a feel good movie and doesn't glorify the gritty hard reality violence of the inner city at all, but rather focuses on strugglin to make it with good humor and staying positive. This movie is downright laugh out loud caliber. The situations this odd couple is forced into are interesting and very funny. The re-watch value for Friday is tremendous and the characters are beautifully developed. There are some true memorable moments in Friday, and even more memorable characters. This is just a fun movie from start to finish and never tries to be perfect. Thank you for keeping it light, and to the point. All we wanted was some fun and it was delivered with Friday.

So pleased to finally get my copy. It was a good reminder of where so many movies have since drawn inspiration. Doesn't matter how many times I watch it I'm still laughing.

Arrived in excellent time and condition.

Thank you Ice Cube (and Chris Tucker)

As I have mentioned these story line's are a new way to look at the afro- American culture, very deep and entertaing script. I will enjoy watching over and over again.
