Product Description

Low-budget sci fi horror revolving around Sam (Philip Sayer), a devoted family man who returns to Earth three years after being abducted by aliens, now possessing special powers. On his return, Sam seeks out his wife Rachel (Bernice Stegers) and son Tony (Simon Nash), but discovers that his wife is now living with a man named Joe (Danny Brainin). Rachel struggles to decide what her feelings are for the two men, while Sam's strange behaviour begins to affect Tony in frightening ways.

A great UK alien horror which has stood the test of time incredibly well. Another film I saw whilst quite young which was subsequently banned during the 'video nasties' hysteria but has 're-emerged' once again for its latest dvd release. There are no extras at all on the dvd and it appears that the print is straight from video judging by the film quality; the picture stutters a bit early on, this is not a fault with the disc as I remember this being the case whilst watching it on video but in any case is all rather superficial and does not detract from the delights that await.
Early on in the story a man is abducted by aliens in the form of an intense white light, witnessed by his young son. Forward three years later the son 'Tony' (still managing to look the same age, haircut etc) is still experiencing trauma, nightmares etc whilst his mother and wife of the abductee (Sam) believes her ex to have simply run off with someone else.
Sam returns in unforgettable fashion, via the union of an alien host and a rather unfortunate young woman and sets out to relocate his son. Unfortunately for everyone else Sam has 'changed' and then some, since he left earth three years prior and doesn't possess much empathy for his fellow man anymore. There are some really nice, novel ideas and minor idiosyncracies in Xtro. I liked the way he nonchalantly uses the car of the couple he has killed, driving to London with the female dead in plain view in the passenger seat where he killed her, also the first time he tries to use a telephone.
Anyway Sam manages to begin the process of 'changing' his son and Tony rapidly learns to use his newly acquired powers to suit his own sinister ends.Read more ›

A bright light separate's 'Tony' from his father 'Sam' during a country stroll,
when the light goes out 'Sam' has disappeared.
Three years have past since the incident, young 'Tony' has frequent nightmare's,
he cannot accept his father has gone and won't come back.
'Rachel' 'Sam's' wife has moved on she's now with 'Joe'
After a bizarre series of gory happenings 'Sam' re-appears seemingly expecting
everything to be the same as it was before he left, he claims to have lost his
memory.
'Sam' is not the same man that left three years past, when alone with his son 'Tony'
he appears to be grooming his son to become what he is now.
'Rachel' is confused about her feelings and decides to take 'Sam' to the country
retreat they used frequently in the past, hoping it will help him remember things.
'Tony' has been left at home with 'Joe' and home-help 'Maryam' where bizarre
things begin to happen seemingly orchestrated by the youngster.
Events continue to take a decided turn for the worse.
A 'B-Movie' from the early 80's that certainly holds your attention, with many nasty and
intense sequences.
(wonder how this would look if it had been filmed with the benefit of todays technology ?)
Worth taking time out to watch (providing you haven't a weak stomach)
Many films made around the same time were subjected to a lengthy ban, including this
one, they were labelled as 'Video Nasty's'
The Censor's had in the early 70's become for lenient with their assessments, however
with the emergence of Video players the market was flooded with 'Video-nasty's' while
film companies got there act together to accomidate the demand for home viewing.
Some of those 'Nasty's' should never resurface, this film is more than acceptable in
todays world in which almost anything goes.

A family man is abducted by aliens when they see how high he can throw a stick. Then, a few years later he comes back to earth and attempts to return back to his family life, claiming to remember nothing of his disappearance, which causes initial problems as his Mrs has moved on. So he does what any self respecting, abnormal, evil alien, father for justice might do and starts infecting everyone around him, eating snake eggs, getting high on British Gas and trying to abduct his son...
Really good, low budget, Brit sci-fear from the early 80's. The inventive positives, far outweighing the negatives. The music could be seen as either, sounding like a Tomorrow's World's special on Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy and likewise, some of the performances are a bit stilted but that kind of helps the rather offensive goings on. Some highlights include the repulsive creature effects, the infamous 'rebirth' scene, Bond girl D'Abo being turned into a cocooned alien ovulater and of course all the cool psychic manifestations that occur, like ABC's, killer dwarf clowns and a 6ft Action Man that bayonets nosey neighbours!!!
Overall this is a nasty, cheap little Brit shocker with some truly slimy ideas, just the way we like em eh? And one which I happen to think is a bit of a gem. It was followed by two americanized sequels, neither of which were a patch on this. The director has delivered some interesting output over the years, shame he doesn't do more.
The print on review is the German double disc Marketing Film release, which is hardly crystal clear but is certainly an improvement on the old VHS. It appears to have more gore than the old pre-cert too but that could be just down to the darkness of the old print and the darkness of my memory.
4.5/5 Watch the skies folks!
