4.0 out of 5 stars Cube meets Sherlock Holmes, 28 Oct 2009

(REAL NAME)
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
When converting a series of gruesome fantasies which, when correlated, seem to be a series of effed' up ways to kill someone - you can't help but wonder how they can make a game based on this idea. Most games now'days have contextual violence, some gruesome, some tame - but the Saw franchise has focused it's core on violence. Interestingly, we've done a 180 spin and in actuality the Saw game has put story and substance into something that is otherwise gore for the sake of gore.

Basically, the best way to summarize Saw (or the game-play that is Saw)would be the following:
The tone, mood and drab colours and lighting are the same as the movie.
The cinematography, flash back system and gloom are all apparent, abundant in fact.
As with the latter movies, the game is singularly based on one character (thus far).
We have a series of empathetic rhetoric mixed with pseudo-logical tests and puzzles (think.. Cube meets Sherlock Holmes)

There is story, there is mood, there is style and there is a graphical engine that surpasses my expectations. The visuals are gorgeous, and although nothing to write home about, I'm sure we can all admit we've seen some pretty horrific lighting attempts in the next gen scene. It does feel like a recycled Silent Hill 5 system, but completely overhauled where Silent Hill 5 disappointed. Textures are believable - and a keen eye has been used when emulating the gritty feel of the movies we hate to enjoy.

I suppose, although lame, what we're asking is 'is Saw just a way to make a quick buck on behalf of the gore hype surrounding this pop-culture fad'. The answer: No. Saw, the game, offers much more of an experience than the movies. It genuine empathy where otherwise we feel disconnected. Although an emulation of reality, being plugged into the morality of the character does give you that closeness to actually question the twisted philosophies presented to us through this pop-philosophical thriller.

So, to summarize, although the tests and games are somewhat easier than you'd expect, they -are- creative, and you're left feeling a sense of rush when you've completed something that would otherwise pull your chin over your face and back down to your ankles.
