Living Dead at Manchester Morgue [DVD] [1974] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] is a double disc delight. Not only do you get one of the finest and most underrated zombie genre movies ever made but you get lots of additional add ons including a wonderful location feature called "Back to the Morgue" with the films delightful and insightful director Jorge Grau. This is a must for any genre fan or film buff. The film itself is the full unrated version and definitely the best available on the dvd market bar none. For its age this film I suppose must be considered one of the standard bearers along with Romero's Night of the Living Dead who the director Grau himself as admitted was his own inspiration. The difference between Romero's classic and Grau's is that this masterpiece comes at you in glorious colour and therefore for me personally as more reverence and effect than Romero's legendary classic. For me this was the zombie film that set the whole genre forward including Romero's very own Dawn of the Dead which came several years after this film. I have personal delight in watching the opening scenes when Ray Lovelock - George decides to travel to the countryside for the week for reasons explained soon after. It is the opening montage of Lovelock and his Norton motorbike as he travels through different locations in and around Manchester town centre, a place that I myself know well and even to this day I still hold dear as a fellow Mancunian who still lives in Greater Manchester. As the wonderful soundtrack composed & conducted by Giuliano Sorgini plays through the opening scenes it adds to the spice of an industrial city backdrop. Grau even takes a moment here to throw in a female streaker who leans by the doors of Manchester's famous cathedral.Read more ›

I bought this 'blue underground' release a few years ago on dvd and was really happy with the film and the print. Recently, going through a crazy blu-ray purchase phase I decided to pick this up. Boy am I glad I did. The print is wonderful with a healthy layer of natural grain... not intrusive but perfect y'know. Hardly any flecks or dirt show up. I also noticed how the opening sequence of the movie title is different to my 'blue underground' u.s dvd version. All i could think of was how damn brilliant this film is and the quality of the transfer. Best of all though, this import is already in the uk. I'm no stranger to buying u.s imports because they seem to take forever and a day to get released here.. and sometimes not at all. But this movie is already imported. I think that's because the film is actually region-free, so anyone can enjoy it. I have a multi-region blu-ray player and regions wouldn't of been an issue, but if your thinking of grabbing this, don't think about it anymore and just order it. A classic in every sense of the word. Good acting, police brutality, great surprise effects for a film of it's age and some voice-acting humour. Hell, uncle romero would be most proud. I have the brilliant soundtrack as well (Quartet records / QRSCE015 (dual soundtrack cd with 1970's 'horror express' (john cacavas). Recommend movie & soundtrack!

over the years i have had this movie in many formats but this blu underground is far the best one to have come out.it has a nice sharp picture the coloure is good as is the sound.i wont go into the story line because if you are a fan you will no this just to say if you want a good print of this movie just get it from blu underground and no were else you wont be sorry you did by the way this is a reg free disc which is even better oh the extras are good to.lets hope they release another one of my favorites nightmare city because if its as good as this one i will be a very happy bunny 10/10 more please

After they (literary) bump into each other a man & woman become suspects in a series of gory murders, the woman tells the police that she saw zombies, but they don't believe her and the zombies continue there murderous rampage.

Jorge Grau's excellent take on the zombie movie is one of the best. Some lovely location shooting in the north of England stands out in a genre where America is king. Cristina Galbo delivers a brilliant performance as Edna, she really committed to the role with a quite emotional turn and it shows, Ray Lovelock & Arthur Kennedy are also very good as George & the cop and the dubbing is unusually good. The effects done by make-up genius Giannetto De Rossi are bloody, but realistically very good, the pace throughout is kept up very well as is the suspense, from the moment we first see a zombie (great suspense scene) until the climatic finale the film is not only full of tension but is actually genuinely frightening at times. The hospital sequence at the end is brilliant and a little unexpected, it also does remind you of this films biggest influence- Night Of The Living Dead. The one weakness for me was the story, its a little dull and forgettable, but because the film is fairly well paced the story takes second place and it doesn't hurt the narrative drive.

Obvious why this was placed on the video nasty list, but don't go into this with a pre-conceived notion of nasty gory violence this is much more and an interestingly compelling watch.
