Synopsis

Russell Mulcahy's original saga of immortal Scotsman Connor Macleod, one of a race of immortals who can only be killed when beheaded with a sword. After living in peace for four centuries, he is challenged by an old enemy named Kurgan. During a fierce sword battle in the 1500s, Connor MacLeod, a simple Scotsman known as a poor fighter, is mortally wounded -- but he does not die. MacLeod learns from the mysterious Ramirez that he is of a race of immortals. These rare knights never age and never reproduce, they can only meet death by the blade of another of their kind. Leaping back and forth through the centuries, MacLeod once again meets the evil Kurgan who nearly killed him 500 years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Currently The Best Version, 6 Mar 2010
By Dna Read (Neath,Wales,UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Highlander [Blu-ray] [1986] (Blu-ray)
If you are like myself,I have owned all the Highlander's from VHS and a number of DVD releases. I was expecting this Blu Ray to be a bit of a dissapointment, I glad to report, that this is far superior to any other release out there. Yes, you get flaws with grain in the film, but to honest the picture quality is a big jump the ladder.

In my opinion,it's as good as it's going to get, unless it gets the Hollywood Money and treatment in the latest remastering, and lets be honest, thats never going to happen!
Take no notice of the moaners,it is and will always be a classic movie with visual flaws

4.0 out of 5 stars Immortal? Nearly but not quite!, 7 Feb 2010
By Daniel Howe "Kingsize Dan" (London) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Highlander [Blu-ray] [1986] (Blu-ray)
Ignore the nay-sayers, Highlander has never looked this good! Having owned VHS and DVD copies previously, I can guarantee that Highlander will never look more polished than this without serious money being spent by the studio (like Bladerunner or Star Wars), and it'll never happen! This is a "warts & all" release, with even the Director of Photography in the "Making Of..." documentary (transferred from a German DVD release) pointing out such things as the Skycam visible in the wrestling scene, or the shadow of the camera crane passing across the Kurgen's face. HD quality has been both a blessing and a curse to this film, making it look stunning in parts, but also highlighting its flaws. Some of the visual effects have clearly not dated well, and the quality of the film stock varies between scenes. However, those who say their DVD quality is better are talking rubbish; the outdoor highland scenes look gorgeous on blu-ray! As for the 1-star reviewer saying how poor the film is...this release is unlikely to win over legions of new fans, but for those of us who've loved it since 1986 this is an essential purchase! However I only give it 4/5 because it is missing the three Queen music videos present on the original Region 1 Immortal Edition DVD, and also the "Deleted Scenes" are nothing of the sort. They are extended/alternate scenes which are also missing the audio track, so a temp music track has been put in place, and not very interesting at all. For years I'd heard rumours of scenes such as the Kurgan slitting a sheep open and tossing it aside when first bursting in upon Ramirez and Heather, and a scene involving Mcleod, Kastagir and a coke dealer on a New York subway...If they ever existed they are not on this disc!

4.0 out of 5 stars This Bluray disc marked as Region 'B' plays on Region 'A' players, 30 April 2010
This review is from: Highlander [Blu-ray] [1986] (Blu-ray)
I bought the Highlander 10th Anniversary Director's Cut Region 1 DVD and was very disappointed with the picture quality, it was very grainy indeed. I was very excited to find a Bluray version on Amazon.UK. I can only play American Region 'A' Bluray. It's a pity that Amazon never bother to give The Region details for Bluray discs. I buy 99% of all my Discs from Amazon.com. I find that The American transfers are far Superior to The UK, many of the American Bluray discs support Regions A B & C. plus many discs are Region free.
I researched as best I could to find out if this Highlander Bluray was region free, as it was originally Warner Bros in The States it would be region free as are all their Bluray discs. When I received the Disc I was very disappointed to find it marked Region 'B', I had a gut feeling that it may be region free but just marked 'B' to please The UK market! Anyway I can confirm that it WILL play on Region 'A' DVD players including PlayStation 3.
AMAZON please in future give us Region details for Bluray Discs. Oh by the way, picture Quality is much improved indeed.
