Arthur Lowe is plenty of humor in one of the best comedies produced by BBC. Very recomended for lovers of Lowe's plays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite so!, 16 Oct 2009
For Amazon customers not familiar with this series, I'll begin with a scene-setting description:

Arthur Lowe plays Leonard Swindley - the assistant manager at a branch of the chain store, Dobson & Hawks (Mr. Swindley was a character who'd appeared originally in Coronation Street, played by Arthur Lowe there as well). Pardon the Expression was broadcast by ITV in 1965-66, with scripts by Jack Rosenthal, Vince Powell and Harry Driver, among others. It wasn't a soap opera, but an out-and-out comedy series - in which the character of Mr. Swindley resembles that of Dad's Army's Captain Mainwaring in many ways, although Swindley is more deferential and less authoritarian. In my view, the comedy here is enjoyable first and foremost because of the characters - and the consequent familiarity which breeds contentment. Swindley's standard response - when he can't think of anything else to say - is "Quite so!" The manager in the first series was Mr. Parbold (Paul Dawkins), but in the second he was replaced by Mr. Hunt (Robert Dorning) - both series feature canteen manageress Mrs. Edgeley (Betty Driver) and staff manageress Miss Sinclair (Joy Stewart). Guest appearances are made in various individual episodes by such actors as John Le Mesurier, John Laurie, Wendy Richard, Warren Mitchell, and Amanda Barrie - to name a few.

As for the DVDs themselves, I found the picture and sound quality to be more than adequate (considering such factors as the age of the programme) - and I'm grateful that Pardon the Expression has been released in its entirety by Network. As a bonus in the Series 2 DVD set, there is a Christmas Episode - made in the mid-sixties, but never broadcast.

Although this is, supposedely, a review of Series 2 - I also recommend Series 1. There is more emphasis on character comedy there. If Series 2 has a drawback, it's a tendency in some episodes to veer towards slapstick, which struck me as slightly out of place.
