Synopsis

Matthew Weiner, a writer and executive producer for THE SOPRANOS, may have set this series in the picture-perfect 1960s, but his characters are just as scheming as the mobsters on his last show. MAD MEN begins in 1960 on Manhattan's Madison Avenue at the fictional ad agency of Sterling Cooper. Creative director Don Draper (Jon Hamm) rules the halls of his company and the hearts of every woman he meets, while his wife, Betty (January Jones), struggles to be the perfect mate and mother back in Connecticut. But just as in the world of advertising, Don may not be all that he appears.

In MAD MEN, the glass ceiling is dangerously low, and sexism reigns in a way that may shock modern viewers. But this isn't the prim '60s of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW; Weiner's characters seduce, smoke, and swig with abandon--often within the walls of Sterling Cooper. MAD MEN takes equal parts substance and style to create an addictive cocktail that fully earned its freshman season wins at the Golden Globes for Best Dramatic Series and Best Actor in a Drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Brilliance, 4 Dec 2009

This review is from: Mad Men - Season 1-2 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This must be the most addictive TV show I have ever watched. I wasnt expecting to love the characters as much as I did. The male behaviour back in the 60's is captured so well in these two series. Give it a go its a sure fire winner!

3.0 out of 5 stars Java results in loss of Resume function and long load times on blu-ray set, 3 May 2010
This review is from: Mad Men - Season 1-2 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This review relates to the blu-ray version.
Java is increasingly used for blu-ray discs. This is probably not a problem for a single movie which one usually watches in one sitting, perhaps pausing it occasionally.
However it is a big problem for this multi-part series. This is because the 'Resume' function on the blu-ray player does not work with blu-ray Java discs! So if you need to press Stop and come back to continue viewing a few days later, there is no memory stored of the point in the series or the episode break at which you stopped, due to the Java disabling this basic function on the blu-ray player. You cannot Resume from where you left off the day or week before. This is really infuriating and, as there is no listing of episode titles or synopses in the Mad Men packaging, it is very hard to find your place again; each episode does not have a title in its rolling front credits, the title list can only be found on the Top Menu which you can only access during Play by pressing Stop thus losing your place in the series or episode! And each time you press Stop to consult the Top Menu, the Java has to reload all over again which takes AGES. I honestly think that this technology has taken a great leap backwards with this infuriating quirk.
The drama itself is immaculate. Just as well....

5.0 out of 5 stars TV at its very best, 16 July 2010
By Mr. P. M. D. Navin "P. Navin" (Buckinghamshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mad Men - Season 1-2 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Mad Men is, without doubt, one of the finest dramas ever made for TV. Set in the 60's against the backdrop of the embryonic world of advertising and marketing it follows numerous characters, notably Don Draper, as they live, drink and smoke their way through New York life. Affairs, sexism, racism, psychiatry and cigarettes, lots of cigarettes. The show doesn't really benefit from blu-ray so if you're wavering, buy the dvd box sets.
The performances in this show are stellar, the writing is top notch and the decor on the sets is so detailed you'll hardly credit it. The sequences dealing with brands we all know and love are wonderfully crafted, often cheekily cynical. A show for real TV afficianados.
