Product Description

Eleven year-old Toe Thompson is the designated punch bag for the bullies of the suburban community town of Black Falls, where his and everyone else's parents work for Black Box Industries, the makers of the do-it-all gadget that's sweeping the nation. During a freak storm a mysterious Rainbow Rock, which grants wishes to anyone who touches it, falls from the sky. Suddenly the neighbourhood that Toe already finds weird is about to get a lot weirder. As the Rainbow Rock ricochets round the town, from kid to kid, parent to parent, wishes come true and soon throw the entire community into complete disarray. Robert Rodriguez, the director of hit family movie Spy Kids, brings kids an action-packed and hilarious adventure movie with Shorts. All a parent could ask for from a fun-filled wholesome piece of entertainment.

From Amazon.co.uk

A fantastical story, relayed in the form of short vignettes by director Robert Rodriguez, Shorts is the story of a magic wishing rock and kids' imaginations gone wild. The film plays a lot like the The Little Rascals films from the 1920's-1940's. It's made up of short, comical episodes that focus on kids' adventures and how imagination drives their play.

When a magical rainbow rock falls from the sky and lands in the middle of tech-town Black Falls, a young boy Toe (Jimmy Bennett) discovers that the rock has the power to grant his every wish. The victim of constant bullying, Toe wishes for friends as unusual as himself and ends up with a posse of aliens who protect him while seriously complicating his life. As narrator, Toby quickly stops the film, explaining that his experience is really the middle of the story, and then rewinds repeatedly to relate various encounters between neighbourhood kids and the magic rock. Each short is its own journey into a kid's imagination where wishes for everything from a treasure hunt, to a fortress guarded by crocodiles, a super smart baby with telepathic powers, and a booger monster grown from one boy's booger are immediately granted. These fantastical wishes wreak havoc on the entire Black Falls community: the children, the technology obsessed, disconnected Black Box employees, and the tyrannical Black Box boss Mr. Black (James Spader).

In the end, the magic rock is a catalyst for change, encouraging kids and adults to work together and inspiring serious reflection regarding one's wishes, dreams, and goals. Rodriguez does a great job of portraying the wildness of kids' imaginations and viewers that delight in over-the-top ridiculousness and the overtly gross will laugh hysterically throughout the film. Unfortunately, those who demand restraint may find it overdone. --Tami Horiuchi

As regular readers of Radiant Rose's reviews will know, I will watch anything with James Spader in it. This loyalty, however, was put to the test when I learnt of his decision to appear in a film where he would be wearing fake ears. Plus, there is a snot monster in it. Not really my sort of thing. At all.

But ... a fan is a fan. And I was pleasantly surprised by this. Fortunately, the snot monster looked very generic and didn't really remind me of nasal contents, and the part with the bird dropping wasn't too foul either. I have seen far more gross body fluid jokes in some teen-movie spoofs.

The film held my attention. I passed on the DVD to a family member, and have heard that it is a big hit with seven year old boys.

I loved the featurette where Robert Rodriguez showed how he and his children had made the rough version of the film (to show to financial backers). (The other featurette, with the baking, seems a little out of place.) Three of Rodriguez's children, Rebel, Racer and Rocket, act in the finished film.

All in all, I would watch this again. Particularly if I were babysitting.

SHORTS. Well, i couldn't make up my mind. On the one hand, some scenes were pretty funny and interesting and on the other hand this was kinda one of the most irritating films ever made! Hellvetica Black is the bullying daughter of MR BLACK who has created the Black Box. Furious at the mindless rip-offs being made all over the world, he decides to take his power to new lengths. But little does he know that there is one, tiny little stone that is more powerful than anything that ever was or ever will be created on planet Earth. A rainbow coloured rock!

So yeah, the plot is reasonably funny, interesting and magical. But the people who thought of this film decided to ruin it and turn it into lots of short stories. They keep pausing, playing, rewinding and fastforwarding right in the middle of intense action scenes. This was unnecessary, as they could have just made a normal, children's comedy adventure! i find myself agreeing more with the 1 & 2 star reviews more than the 4s & 5s. So i decided maybe i should give this a 3 star.

RENT IT!

Saw this at the cinema when it came out and wanted to see if we liked it as much second time round. We did. Particularly liked that it went forwards and backwards in time and you thought you knew what was going on then it gave you another perspective. My kids aged 8 and 9 got it all, and were glued to see where it would go next. Thought it was creative and funny. Buy it, but not if you like your films to get from A to B by the most direct route.

This is one of the best films I've seen this year. Yes, it was a bit random - that was the point! Hilarious cuts from scene to scene, crazy moment to outrageous incident, and forwards and backwards in time. Favourite moments: a crocodile hurtling through the air, jaws open, frozen above her head by a baby who suspended time. And the film-long staring contest. If you don't get any other children's film this year, get this!

A Kid's Review on 21 Aug. 2010
Format: DVD
'Shorts' is an ok family film. But there are several things that make it bad:

- It has a messed up storyline.

- Some acting was terrible (lead rold was good)

- They tried to make it more funny than it actually is.

- Some bits were totally disgusting.

But i did think the lead role was good and i like the idea of the wishing rock. Overall, 3 star.

It should have a parental guide of under 7 only. Its that level. Seven year olds and younger will love it. Its just too silly, boring and words fail me, otherwise. Disappointing considering the Director also did Lave girl/shark boy which was a huge hit. What was he thinking in this one. ?

Was a really fun film that me (the dad), and my 11 yo daughter and 9 yo son enjoyed. Daughter though the cutup storyline would be hard to follow, but we all got it. Good acting and pretty decent special effects. Well worth a watch.
