Product Description

CD Description

Trad jazz is the quintessential sound of the English summer. It's enjoyed at Henley Regatta, Wimbledon Tennis and at Cricket matches and village fairs up and down the country. Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball are the kings of the UK trad jazz movement, and Boaters, Bowlers & Bowties presents the very best of their music. From the early 60s onwards, they spearheaded the revival of traditional jazz in the UK and scored numerous top 10 hits along the way, becoming household names in the process. Acker Bilk's "Stranger On The Shore" holds the record for the longest time spent on the UK singles chart, and was also the first single by a UK solo artist to go to Number 1 in the USA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toe Tapping Time, 30 July 2009
By M. Dowden (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
A fantastic compilation for all ages, this double cd has 40 tracks giving you just over two hours of some absolutely great music. I was too little to appreciate any of this at the time so I am happy with this album, I can tap my toes to my heart's content. This album is made up from tracks originally recorded in the 60's and 70's so the sound quality is very good.

Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball were all proponents of what is known as Trad Jazz (Trad is short for traditional) and the style of this music is the old New Orleans jazz style, which if you listen to this you will see how well they play it. Trad was big especially from the 50's in this country as well as apparently Australia, and indeed when I see some busker groups playing this (usually in the summer) everyone from little children to old age pensioners stand around clapping and tapping their toes. In this day when a lot of music sounds like any other and even the singers sound the same it is refreshing to listen to something that is relaxing and fun.

I would wholely recommend anyone to buy this great compilation, and as an afterthought if you have to travel on packed trains in the rush hour I wolud recommend that you download this to your MP3 player. When everyone is getting uptight because of delays and not enough seats you will be oblivious to it all. This album would also be good to introduce someone to jazz for the first time, or as a present for your dad or grandad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid, a CD full of wonderful nostalgia, 12 Oct 2009
By J. M. Moss "Jean Moss 'Cog'" (Cheshire) - See all my reviews

Boaters, Bowlers and Bowties takes me back on a wonderful journey into the past. I float in a dream into a world of lost romance, the music and jazz lead me back to great happiness; into the nostalgia of a then, wonderful world.
I put on this CD when life 'gets a little too much' I sit back and relax and think of the boy I met at school during the war, we were both aged 15, I think of the remarkable life we spent together. Sadly he left this world in 2001, but I can live every magic moment of our past when I put up my feet and listen to this, for me, magic music played by three masters of their art.
