5.0 out of 5 stars The book of the film of the book..., 27 Nov 2007

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
'30 Days of Night' by Tim Lebbon is the novelisation of the new movie that is based on the graphic novels written by Steve Niles. The story begins when a group of vampires flock to Barrow, Alaska where the sun sets for 30 days, allowing them to feed without the burden of sleep to avoid lethal sunlight. Because of the cold, the vampires' senses are weakened and a few of the town's residents are able to hide. One resident is Sheriff Eben Olemaun, who attempts to save the town and the lives of the few remaining townspeople, including his wife Stella.

This is a very well written novelisation and manages to capture all of the tension and suspense of the movie perfectly. There are also a couple of new scenes which were not included in the movie, such as the polar bear scene, which adds a little more to the storyline. As this is based on the movie rather than the graphic novel it includes all of the additional characters and scenes that were not in the original comic book story, so the story is a lot longer than the original. The thing that I enjoyed the most about reading this was that Lebbon goes into quite some depth regarding the characters' backgrounds, feelings and fears, even those who are in it for only a short moment. This makes the story that bit more scarier and also makes you feel for each of the characters throughout the whole story.

Overall it is a very entertaining read that is perfect for anyone who has enjoyed the graphic novel and the movie and still want more from this fantastic horror story. I'd also recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet had the pleasure as it is a brilliant stand-alone vampire story that is truly creepy and very atmospheric.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional, 11 Nov 2007
By Mr. S. Young (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Lebbon has written a gripping book based on the original graphic novel. We are well aware of Lebbons gift for vivid prose and lavish imagery - when applied to a well structured and pacey plot, the story leaps of the page. I actually preferred the novel to the film as it gave depth to the characters allowing the reader to develop empathy with the inhabitants of Barrow. Don't think of this book as a novelisation of the film; it stands on its own and is a real page turner. I read the book in one sitting purely because I could not put it down.... 5 stars, only because we can't award six!!!
