Product Description

Product Description

Directorial debut of Bill Forsyth following four unemployed Glaswegian teenagers in the 1970s. When Ronnie (Robert Buchanan) discovers that stainless steel sinks are worth a lot of money, he recruits friends Wal (Billy Greenlees), Alec (Allan Love) and Vic (John Hughes) to help him steal 90 of them from a nearby warehouse. The leader of the gang hatches a complex scheme that requires Vic and Wal to dress up as girls and use a sleeping potion, concocted by chemistry expert Bobby (Derek Millar), to borrow a bakery delivery truck for their cunning getaway. With Ronnie at the helm, can the friends pull off the heist and obtain their small fortune?

Synopsis

Bill Forsyth displays some of the fey quirkiness that would distinguish his later, better-known directorial efforts in 1979's THAT SINKING FEELING. The film details the misadventures of four aimless Scottish youths, who impulsively steal a shipment of stainless-steel sinks. Once they've made off with their booty, the boys have quite a time unloading it on prospective buyers.

This DVD contains the restored version of the film in which the voices have been dubbed with milder accents.

I cannot understand how a company with the resources of 2entertain can make a fundemental mistake like this and not notice. The dubbed soundtrack (presumably) for US audiences makes a mockery of a very Scottish film. It really isn't that hard to track down a copy of the OST as it was released on VHS prior to this. Will we be reduced to importing a US copy of TSF with optional Scottish Soundtrack and widescreen option a la Gregory's Girl again ?

I'm sure if North American audiences can understand the accents in Trainspotting they should have no problem with this.

If anyone from 2e is reading this I'm happy to supply the correct soundtrack and help you save face.

I have waited many years for this to be released on DVD but have been sorely let down by the terrible new voiceover. The entire feeling of the film has been completely lost. I can't understand why this had to be done as the only people who want to see this movie wanted it in it's original glory - no one else is interested. Surely they can release another version with the original voices as this one is shocking and unwatchable.

If you've just stumbled upon this recent release and felt your heart leap with joy that one of your favourite Forsyth movies of all time is available on DVD... let me save you the trouble and expense. If you're positively giddy at the idea of a quiet night in enjoying this laugh-a-second classic then you'll just have to be patient. No doubt you'll have vivid memories of many scenes and relish the prospect of seeing, and hearing, them again. You may even recall the tingle of joy you got from hearing Clare Grogan say "a million and nine" in Gregory's Girl? Well if any of that rings true for you then keep your wallet in your pocket and what ever you do... don't buy this DVD until it gets reissued with the original soundtrack. It is quite simply "unwatchable". And if you're new to this and wondering what all the fuss is about... imagine watching, oh I don't know say, The Italian Job or Lock Stock... with upper class accents overdubbed. "Sounds like a laugh" you might even say? Well I wish I could! Jeez I'm gutted!

What a disaster. This wee gem of a film has spent years out of print and off of television. Lucky for me I have an old VHS still on the shelve. Luck for me I say because my VHS is infinitely superior to this DVD release. Now, when I say "infinitely", I should give my reasons why. If they had used my VHS as the master for this DVD release, it would have still been better. 2 Entertain have gone down a very, very lazy route that has absolutely no excuse to be releasing this film with the wrong soundtrack.

Now, you should understand that I work for a well know DVD label and, take it from me, something like this does NOT go un-noticed unless your team is not dedicated to the product at hand. I read an excuse along the lines of "the only version available". Poppycock. If 2E had bothered to invest any interest in That Sinking Feeling getting, arguably, its biggest exposure since the late 70's, they would have bothered to do research and investigate the best possible master material. Hell, even if they used my VHS as an audio master, it would have been infinitely better.

Providing the British public with a bastardized version of there own film, with a soundtrack created for American audiences is an insult. I could only imagine the Americans being baffled if a version of say, Annie Hall were released with a soundtrack dubbed with English accents. Image how much of the humor would be lost in the stilted delivery? Wouldn't be nice would it? No excuses are there? Red faces all round.

I agree with all the other revies. I bought it but shouldn't. The overdubbed version which this is is grossly inferior. It looses the feel of the original. had I known it was not the original I would not have bought it. I will consign it to the bin. 2 entertain should have got their act together and I question shouldn't the cover state that its not the original version. What does the law say on this. Are we due our money back since we bought something that was not correctl advertised

Just a note for the distributor... I have an old VHS copy, and was going to order the DVD, until I saw the warnings about the soundtrack. Gregory's Girl was released with two soundtracks - the original and a less Glaswegian version. If this DVD had the same, I would have bought it. As it is, I'll wait.

It's a great movie, with much of the same charm (and many of the same actors) as Gregory's Girl.

saw this at the ica in the early 80s, and laughed so hard the tears ran down my legs.
i've been waiting for years for this to be released on dvd.
delighted when i saw it on amazon; dismayed when i read it had been dubbed: taking away the element half the comedy comes from.
unbelievable: please give us the original soundtrack.
