DVD Description

In the darkest days of the cruel Meconian Empire, the evil Chancellor Dongalor (Matt Lucas) loomed on the brink of activating The Eye of Gulga Grymna, the deadliest weapon of the ancient world, when a glimmer of hope arrived – the son of a blacksmith and a stay-at-home mum, a freedom fighter of unquestionable bravery, unwavering determination and untameable hair: Kröd Mändoon (Sean Maguire).

Assisting Kröd in his noble struggle are: Aneka (India De Beaufort), a beautiful Pagan warrioress whose weapon of choice is sex, Loquasto (Steven Spiers), a pig-like creature called a grobble, Zezelryck (Kevin Hart), a young warlock whose greatest magical gift is spinning a line and Bruce (Marques Ray), the bereaved jailhouse lover of Kröd's late mentor.

Together, they must overcome a myriad of obstacles in their quest to save the world including insensitive assassins, Succubi with ticking biological clocks, and an amorous, cannibalistic bisexual cyclops, or biclops for short.

Synopsis

With the tyrannical Chancellor Dongalor imposing his sadistic rule over the Meconian Empire, only one man will stand up to the despot in the name of freedom; a blacksmith's son named Krod Mandoon. This fantasy adventure takes every sword and sorcery cliche in the book and lovingly lampoons it to great comic effect. The highly original six-part series features hilarious performances by Sean Maguire (MEET THE SPARTANS) as the reluctant hero, and Matt Lucas (LITTLE BRITAIN) as the evil Dongalor. With a superb supporting cast of bumbling freedom fighters including the beautiful if loose pagan warrioress Aneka (India de Beaufort), the oafish Loquasto (Steve Speirs), inexperienced warlock Zezelryck (Kevin Hart), and the flamboyant Bruce (Marques Ray). Together the group battle against bounty hunters, a bisexual cyclops, succubi, and bad hair days.

3.0 out of 5 stars Barking mad & a bit of a giggle, 7 Jul 2009
By Mr. David Halliday (Ilkeston Derbyshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Storming bravely into the rather overused genre of fantasy parody comes this 6 part BBC comedy. Featuring a clueless all American hero,(Krod), & his brainless companions, Zezelryck the magician with no powers , Bruce a gay prisoner they release & Loquasto a half man half pig brute. With them travels a warrior pagan called Aneka, formerly Krod's girlfriend, whose thirst for fighting is only outdone by her inability to say no to any man or indeed men.
This hopeless quintet are chosen to help free the land from oppression by the evil Chancellor Dongallor & his aide Barnabus. Dongalor is played by Matt Lucas and in truth much of this series success is down to him. He plays the pint size egomaniac with great relish and a fine sense of fun is brought to the screen every time he appears. Utterly ruthless & completely self obsessed he thinks nothing of killing a young womans father & then trying to woo her straight away. Lucas swings his characters moods all over the place and really brings him to life with all sorts of mannerisms and ticks.
The sets and costumes are up to scratch and the plot zips along at a fair old pace. Along the way a host of characters appear briefly to add interest including John Rhys Davis as a proper wizard, and a smart turn from Jonathan Slinger as the complete & utter perv Biclops.
The usual fighting & quest for adventure ensues & there are times when you feel that it's been done before but this is a slick effort that has the savvy to usually not dwell very long on any one scene and to keep up the quickfire banter so that you don't get bored. There is also a feeling of all the right PC boxes being ticked as well but nothing feels forced or out of place so this doesn't detract from the story.
All involved give at least solid performances and the effects are pretty smooth & unintrusive.
This shouldn't be mistaken as being for all the family as there is the odd moment of blood & violence & there is a strong air of innuendo & sexual references are strewn all over the place.
Overall this looks the part, places it's tongue firmly in it's cheek but not so much that the atmosphere & story are sacrificed. It can get stuck a little too long in a scene from time to time but it is great fun & the 6 episodes fly by with much to enjoy.
An open ending seems to point towards the possibility of another series & that would certainly be welcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Likable Half Wits with Heroic pretentions., 7 Jul 2009
Stupid, Ludicrus, Farcical - and thats just Krod and Anika, never mind their demented "love life" - Anika takes acception to chastity belts (she also has the brains).
Unlike other US scripted and modern UK humour, this is actually funny.
I suppose Matt Lucas does add some overwight grotesque humour, but any other demented raving half wit of an despot would have done. The end bit where he tries to exit the castle via (far too small) bat wings (with Barnabus in the rear) is particularly potty.
Sean Magure sports a particularly nice US accent, while a lot of the extras appear to be Welsh ! Seems that in the version of Middle Earth found here, Racoons replace Badgers !
The most disapointing character was the imbicele of a wizard - apparently a US standup comic of some sort.
