Product Description

Product Description

Controversial and sexually explicit drama from director Michael Winterbottom. Matt (Kieran O'Brien) meets Lisa (Margo Stilley), an American student studying in London, at a rock concert at the Brixton Academy. Winterbottom explores the nature of their relationship through a specific focus on their sex life, juxtaposing this with footage of the bands the couple go and see in concert.

From Amazon.co.uk

Please note that this film contains scenes of an extremely explicit sexual nature. --This text refers to the DVD edition.

I enjoyed this film. The notion that it's porn is not really an issue in my opinion. Whatever you want to call it, they appeared to be a couple having an intensely erotic and sexual relationship. Yes their life was quite dull, livened up by the three things that enrich most young peoples lives - sex, drugs and rock & roll. It made me feel quite nostalgic!

The fact that the film explored the highs and lows of a year spent together, with no real future but a sense of immediate gratification that most young people enjoy for a while at least, sets it apart from porn. Porn is almost invariably about nice graphic shots of two (more?) people achieving nothing more than a climax, with a liberal smattering of cruelty, misogony and appaling acting thrown in. There was only one "money shot" in 9 songs and it was a tender, intimate moment with no grunting or fake moaning, or vacuous instructions along the "give it to me baby" school of script. Instead I felt as if I was a voyeur, evesdropping on the life of two pretty ordinary people. A bit like watching Peter Andre and Jordan in the jungle!!

The fact that it was she who appeared to be using him as a means of recreation also set it apart from the norm in terms of porn. He did appear weak, not unlike so many men in a similar situation really. It's not always the woman who falls in love and is hard done by.

The music was gritty, contemporary and shot in a way that felt like a memory of so many concerts one had been to. Not always exactly what you wanted but stimulating and real. The whole became a blurry mess of drugs, music and sex, hingeing on the pretext that something serious was also being planned - just like my days at art college.

An interesting, brave and honest film.

I didn't know that films as good as this were being made in the UK now. It is a classic; economical and spare in style and a good antidote to blockbuster/slasher/dragondungeon/magicalfantasy/CGI Hollywood crap. For an oldie I was surprised to enjoy the rock so much. It was no surprise at all to find the sex and romance so joyful and a pleasure to see. 'Lisa' and 'Pat' were absolutely convincing; realistic, natural and affectionate. Explicit of course, but about as far from porn as you can get. Only Europeans can do relationships as well as this, as well as if not better than in the 'New Wave' and Bergman films I saw in the 1960s at 'The Everyman' in Hampstead. The only bit I didn't quite get in 9 Songs was the sorrowful mood Lisa fell into after the visit to the lapdance club. What was all that about? Concerning the style, the following contrasts were very effective:
* the mostly quiet, slow and intimately focussed inside scenes versus the noisy fast and wide shots at the
concerts
* the cool Nyman music compared to the frantic rock
* the cold, impersonal sculpted scenery of the Antarctic successfully punctuated the whole film.
The only reason for not giving this 5 stars is that the film is too short! Why not a round dozen songs?

The storyline: an English guy is in Antarctica and mulls over his recent relationship with an American girl - they meet, have a lot of sex, go to lots of gigs at the Brixton Academy and occasionally eat and do some coke. That's about it, really. The format of the film is pretty much music scene, followed by sex scene, followed by music scene, followed by sex scene. With a few contrasting scenes from Antarctica.
Music-wise, there are some notable bands in the film and a lovely musical piece by Michael Nyman. The sex is famously explicit and although much prettier than your average porn film, it has the common characteristic of the sex being rather unemotional and unmoving. Unlike, say, Patrice Chereau's Intimacy, there isn't any passion or emotion behind the characters. It's just about two people meeting, having a lot of fun and then parting without any fuss whatsoever. There are plenty of relationships like that so it is not unrealistic but whether you can make a good film out of it is debatable. The most emotionally involving part of the film for me was the Michael Nyman piece! The film is done nicely enough and is not without merit but could really have done with better actors.
If you're looking for a love story, you won't find it here. If you're looking for passionate sex, you won't really find that here either. If you're looking for arthouse sex with some good music - look no further.

To the people who seem tio think this is a pornographic movie, don't delude yourselves - Pornography is produced for one reason and serves only one purpose - we all know what that is without the need to go into detail ;)

This film is not pornography, yes its explicit to the point that nothing is left to the imagination and it is quite erotic without being sleazy, but it is not pornography.

Unlike Shortbus where I thought the explicitness was un-necessary to the film experience, 9 Songs revolves around the sex and because we can actually see it, it makes the whole experience more real.

9Songs as many reviewers have already stated, contains graphic, unsimulated sex.

Is it porn? No.

9 Songs is a story of reflection. A young man remembering a lost romance. His sense of isolation after the break up conveyed through the isolation one feels in the Antarctic. (where Matt, the 'hero' - played by a very brave Kieran O'Brien - works).

Criticism has been placed on this film for the editing. Sex, music, sex music, sex music and so on. However, what seems overlooked is the film is from Matt's perspective. He remembers points in the relationship he's had with Lisa - played by an equally brave Margo Stilley - which were marked by pivotal moments in their relationship: going to see rock concerts.

A modern relationship, we can assume Matt and Lisa met while they were each attending a rock concert. Is this the foundation of their relationship? Is this the one thing they really had in common? We have to assume so, as they seem their happiest when at the concerts.

Like any other initmate relationship there's sex. Winterbottom allows us to share some of the intimate moments Matt experienced with Lisa. Awkwardness, through to being comfortable with one another's nudity, through to the too familiar, almost disinterested area where people just go through the motions because they're a couple.

The film has flaws, but Winterbottom has at least tried to depict a modern relationship. Lisa is just out to have some fun, Matt, however, is being drawn into feelings he didn't expect. When his feelings towards Lisa are not returned in kind, the relationship goes down hill ("I can't make you love me, if you don't, I can't make your heart feel something that it won't" - as George Michael once sang).
