Amazon.co.uk Review

So just how come it took Tim Roth so long to get the lead role in a major television series? Once they’d taken one look at Lie To Me, it’s a fair bet that many casting directors were asking the same question, as Roth manages to breathe plenty of life into the central role of Dr Cal Lightman. Inspired by a real life character, Lightman is the head of The Lightman Group, where he works alongside a team of experts as they go about their chosen business: detecting lies.

We quickly learn that in Lie To Me, Lightman is the king of his craft, and the skills of he and his team are then bolted on to what would otherwise be a fairly standard police drama. For whether it’s helping the cops, the FBI or other US government agencies, Lightman and his crew quickly prove to be brilliant at spotting the slightest hint of dishonesty from microscopic movements and gestures, and their particular skills are thus in high demand.

Fortunately for the drama in Lie To Me, there are plenty of skilled fibbers to practice their work on, and thanks to some excellent writing, the show doesn’t take long to become compulsive viewing. And, let’s not understate this, Roth is brilliant as Lightman, heading up a clever, intelligent show that’s well worth discovering through this first season DVD set if you’ve missed it to date. A treat. --Jon Foster

Synopsis

Inspired by the scientific discoveries of real life body language specialist and criminal investigator Dr. Paul Eikman, the police detective series Lie To Me follows Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth) and his special team of experts as assist local police, government agencies, and federal law enforcement in solving some of their most difficult cases. Dr. Lightman can detect a lie simply by studying a person's face, body, voice, and speech. The simplest gesture can tip Dr. Lightman off. He can read every emotion his subjects had thought they kept hidden, from jealousy, to sexual attraction, to resentment. But as helpful as this talent is in his professional life, it often proves a curse in his personal life. As the leader of The Lightman Group, Dr. Lightman presides over a team comprised of gifted psychologist Dr. Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams), who always has a solid grasp on the big picture, lead researcher Eli Loker (Brendan Hines), who despises the human tendency to lie to such a degree that he practices "radical honesty," and agency newcomer Ria Torres, a true natural in the field of deception detection. Together, The Lightman Group can sniff out any lie, and ensure that justice is served even when the culprit is a master manipulator. Features the first series of the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable, 15 Nov 2009
By C. J. Gornall (Preston, England) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Lie To Me - Season 1 [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
What an excellent show! I haven't enjoyed a new series as much as this since I watched the first season of Regenesis a few years ago. Tim Roth is mesmeric as human lie detector Cal Lightman and whilst I may not know much about body language, I am pretty sure my face lights up whenever Kelli Williams is on screen. This show combines good acting with exciting stories but for me the best parts are when the points made about certain facial expressions or body postures are illustrated with real clips of famous people such as Nixon, Clinton, Obama, the Queen and Princess Diana. The film in Episode 7 of Yasser Arafat and Ehud Barak grappling with each other over who should enter the room last is astonishing and worth the purchase price on its own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Paul Ekman's work reaches out, 10 Jun 2009

This is far the best show on tv at the moment and cant wait for the dvd to be released. The character is based on the real workings of Dr Paul Ekman who has spent 40 years studying micro-expressions and human interaction. The show is fast paced and with true facts about body language- bring on season 2 and if you want to study body language then Joe Navarro book " What every body is saying " is the best you can get

I really enjoy watching The TV programme Lie To Me I like all detective, forensic and crime fighting programmes and have to say Lie To Me offers a more unique, interesting twist and different approach to solving cases. The show is well acted, sometimes unknowingly witty and incredibly engaging.
