One word summed up this film for me - Suprising. On the surface of it, you could be excused for thinking that this would be a poorly written american teen comedy relying on its beautiful leading lady Elisha Cuthbert playing a porn star to sell bucket loads of DVDs. While it is true that this has probably happened, those who purchased for this reason along with those who didn't were in for a real treat. The two leading characters (Emile Hirsch and Elisha Cuthbert) both play their parts extremely well, with Hirsch convincingly pulling off the role of a studious, sheltered 18 year old whose world is turned upside-down by the arrival of "The Girl Next Door". Elisha Cuthbert is also excellent in her role as former porn star who desperately wants to leave her old life and all the stereotypes that go with it behind (The motel scene a particularly good example of this). The film is very funny, with the jokes well placed and original. The story moves well, you never feel the movie is begining to drag, the addition of Cuthberts former producer Kelly helping this, as he plays his role extremely well, stealing the scene on occasion.
The DVD also comes with a good load of extras, featuring a directors commentary, scene specific commentary from Elisha Cuthbert and Emile Hirsch, Gag reel, Deleted scenes and more.
In summary, this movie really was a very pleasant suprise. Not the sell out that could possibly have been expected, but a very good film about coming of age, tasting life and of course, getting the girl. Excellent performances from all parties, a great soundtrack with songs very well used, and above all very funny well placed jokes make this a very appealing package. This comes highly recommended.

Matthew Kidman is a straight 'A' student, goodness pours from his every pore, but something is missing in his life. Then one day the unthinkable happens, the sultry and sexy girl next door becomes his girlfriend. But a skeleton in the closet and a voyage of discovery will ensure that their destinies are about to hit a riotous road.

The Girl Next Door is bawdy, smutty and, plot wise? As stale as two week old bread, it's also excellently written, charming and as funny as heck! The teen sex comedy is by and large a tired old genre, so how nice to visit this 2004 effort to find that it wears its heart on its sleeve and clearly wants to be a message movie with brains as well as heart. Featuring the "Adult Movie Industry" as it does, the piece could so easily have been an excuse for garnering cheap sexy laughs out of flesh for fantasy situations, oh they are there for sure, but for every nerdy wet dream gag, we have it cloaked in intelligence of thought provoking interest.

Taking the lead female role, and positively oozing sexuality, is Elisha Cuthbert, wonderfully essaying the working girl who really does just see her profession as a means to an end, with true love seemingly passing her by. On top nerd form we have Emile Hirsch {Matthew}, Paul Dano and Chris Marquette, with Timmothy Olyphant doing a smashing weasel turn as a troublesome producer and ex boyfriend of Cuthbert. Bonus comes in cameo form from the ever watchable James Remar, for the ladies his thong wearing skit is of interest surely, for us blokes his sequences are comedic joy only! It's interesting looking at the respective careers of those involved, Cuthbert was the draw card here, yet she has gone on to become something of a C movie star, starring in such poor fare as Captivity.

When I saw the trailer of this film on TV I thought it was just another boring romantic chick flick, I couldn't have been more wrong. To be honest its hard to sum up this film in words, but i'll try.
This is the best teen movie ever because it is so unlike any other teen movie thats been made. Lads if your thinking about watching this film I suggest you don't watch it with your girlfriends, for one reason, Elisha Cuthbert. If you havn't heard of Elisha Cuthbert before or you don't think she's stunning, watch The Girl Next Door and afterwards you won't be able to stop thinking about her.
The Director Luke Greenfield said that if he couldn't get Emile Hirsche to play the part of Mathew he probably wouldn't have made the film. He plays the role perfectly and his and Elisha Cuthbert's on-screen chemistry is amazing. Elisha Cuthbert is not just beautiful she is also a very talented actress, look out for her other films Old School and House of Wax.

This film is utterly brilliant. Class acting and a great story line. If you are hesitating on whether to buy this or not just remember that:
- There are fit actors
- They can actually act
- The story line's good
- It's hilarious
Trust me. This film wont let you down.

In a world where it appears everyone approaches film with the seriousness of a stuffy Newsnight reviewer, 'The Girl Next Door' has for me provided the perfect antidote, after all, film, particular in this genre should entertain and leave a feel good factor long after the ending credits.

First and foremost this film has a superb soundtrack, not fully replicated in its 'Official Soundtrack CD' release, beginning with Queen and Bowie, through Elliott Smith, Echo and the Bunnymen, Thunderclap Newman, The Verve and finishing with the appropriate and addictive Baba O' Riley by The Who. The music rather than being an add on to the film, feels fully integrated as the rollercoaster of emotions throughout the film unfold.

Regarding the film itself, honestly this is the only film I have watched, then felt an immediate desire to buy the DVD, it provides a feel good factor that is rare nowadays, far from being a sleezy affair that its marketing may suggest the film has romance and comedy in spades.

Cuthbert plays her role beautifully, portraying the role of Danielle, not as a 2 dimensional 'whore' but as a rounded character that the audience genuinely want to succeed, add to this that she is quite simply stunningly beautiful and it is obvious why Cuthbert is so in-demand in Hollywood 3 years after the release of this film. This is not to ignore her co-star Hirsch though, who plays a geek, but one who seems to have something about him with a likeability that completes this film, add Timothy Olyphant in a ruthless yet warm and amusing role and this film will certainly entertain you, leave you with a feel good factor and as The Who scream about Teenage Wasteland the sense that 'the juice was certainly worth the squeeze'!

I will always remember 'The Girl Next Door'.
