2.0 out of 5 stars Not so special, 16 Sep 2009
By Mr. Sj Beddoes - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Sorry to say, but this movie just doesn't have the fun or character of it's 2005 predecessor, Alone in the Dark. Alone in the Dark II is more of a straight-to-video bargain-bin flick, which isn't always a bad thing, but this one just drags...

While Uwe Boll regular Zack Ward shows up here (this is NOT an Uwe Boll film, this is just produced by him), the rest of the cast are mostly going through the motions and the camera work, lighting and music seem to reflect the same sentiments. Christian Slater's brilliant role of Ed Carnby is here given to an Asian guy who nobody has heard of, who does a pretty awful job, bringing absolutely none of the charisma Slater brought to the role, and not for one second will you believe you're looking at the same character.

What's worse, the majority of this film sees Carnby bed-bound with some kind of illness/curse, and a family looking after him. Only at the very beginning and very end does anything interesting actually happen. Admittedly though, those beginning and end parts are actually quite good.

While it was teased that this movie would be based on the recent Alone in the Dark game which, while it may not have played brilliantly, it certainly had an interesting cheesy story which could make a great movie (and, sort of ironically, was the inspiration for the first movie before it was semi-cancelled and pushed back years and changed so much that it doesn't resemble it at all), this doesn't seem to resemble the film in any way apart from being set in Central Park. The plot is about a sort of (very cool) witch creature and a cursed knife, and it doesn't really go beyond that.

Not really worth your time, to be honest. It's not an awful movie, but it certainly does drag and you'll find yourself either fast forwarding or just switching off. Go watch the first film instead and have a blast (provided you can have fun with films and aren't looking for something completely serious).

1.0 out of 5 stars Alone in the dark and should have stayed there, 18 Jul 2009
By Peter J. Hodgson "Grim" (UK) - See all my reviews

The original movie based on the awesome game series wasnt exactly a hit lets face it, the effects were poor and the story was just not interesting at all BUT it was watchable and the actors made a genuine effort. Alone in the dark 2 sees the reprise of the Carnby character originally played by Christian Slater, the big question hanging is why Slater was replaced by an Asian actor and not a very good one either. The character seems to know nothing about the occult and supernatural, in the games and original he knew his stuff and was a tough guy! In this one he is a major wimp and his performance just sucks. In fact everyone sucks in this film even Danny Trejo and Bill Moseley for whom I have respect for in the genre, but even they cant be bothered and are quite rubbish. Lance Henricksen is the only one who seems to care and puts on an excellent performance, you get the feeling he is reading from a better version of the script or maybe re-wrote his own parts which is interesting for a man who didnt learn to read and write till he was 30 years old. The script is awful, the leading lady is empty and glass who when facing seemingly unnatural situations barely even flinches even though her character supposed to be in real peril. Lance Henricksen isnt a main character but he is in a few scenes seems to be only aspect worth watching in fact the depth and effort he puts in stopped me from turning the whole thing off and sending it back to blockbuster. The witch, yes the story is about some witch not demons hordes is the most silly thing I have ever seen its not even intimidating. The FX are a bit better than the original but only a tad. Alone in the dark 2 is just terrible and shouldnt wear the mantel of an excellent game or even a below average flop. Dont waste your time on it.
