Product Description

The phrase love is blind takes on an entirely new significance in this ravishing documentary that mixes whimsical animation with the real experiences of four different blind men and women. Artfully composed and compassionately drawn, Juraj Lehotsky s distinctive debut feature is a touching, inventive and often very funny portrait of the way people live without sight. In his first documentary feature, Juraj Lehotsky examines the unique forms that love and happiness take when shared by the blind. Without the distraction of sight, emotional and spiritual connections are vividly heightened, provoking thoughts about what love means or lacks in the sighted world. Blind Loves sensitively delves into its subjects innermost lives and finds a charming and witty visual language to express their unique and imaginative perceptions of the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life beyond sight, 27 Sep 2009
Blind Loves plays on the idea love really is blind. The film opens up the expression through 4 different people, music teacher Peter,Romany Miro, pregnant Elena and teenager Zuzana. We see couples, married and unmarried and the things they do to relate and overcome their disability. The teenager has a friend who can see.She gives herself up to romantic musings, listens to classical music and sends messages on the internet or types in a school. She dreams of the man she may meet and if he'll accept her blindness. She goes swimming with her sighted friend who describes the young men around the pool. She has a blind date that doesn't materialize. You can't help but think she'll be
disillusioned, she's only 14. Miro loves his half blind white girlfriend but her parents are not too happy with this. They are seen out together at funfairs or dancing in a nightclub. They go camping. He makes her pregnant and she is overwhelmed by fear about telling her parents and the consequences of having the baby. She needs to think and retreats for a while.A lot of the happenings are re-enacted,but the feelings are spontaneous.Peter is a music teacher who plays piano for a blind choir and they are shown in rehearsals. However he is shown musing with the unnecessary use of animation which jarred with the rest of the film.Elena is nervous about her pregnancy, will the baby be born blind too?The film is quite intimate about vulnerability, their sense of touch and their use of sound(eg playing over old mobile conversations),the course of love and romance. There is spontaneity about their self-expression.The film is never dull, finding new ways to frame social identity, attachment, feeling and pleasure with an unforced use of re-enactment to replay incidents from their lives. The cinematography is never less than enthralling and adventurous in framing.Juraj Lehotsky's first documentary feature is heart-warming.
