2.0 out of 5 stars Another big release on the hardcore calendar, 7 Jul 2009
By E. Burrowes "Hardcore Til I Die" (Surrey, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Helter Skelter (Vs Raindance) CDs have become one of the major hardcore compilations in the last few years and have generally been well received -- especially for their inclusion of old school and rave breaks. However, the obligatory rave breaks disc of past compilations is notably absent here which is bound to upset a few fans (myself included). That definitely dropped it a few points on my scale before I'd even listened. From what I'd heard pre-listening, I gathered both discs would be purely UK hardcore (hence the "Sound Of Hardcore 2009") but with a few "twists" on the second mix. I'll jump forward a few hours so you can find out!

I personally haven't been able to find out who mixed which disc or whether they both had a hand in each (which is what I'm assuming) but it doesn't matter too much anyway. On the first disc, mixed by whoever, the album's name couldn't have been any truer. It was over an hour of the happy-to-the-extreme hardcore that seems to symbolise our genre today. I'm not as cynical as a lot of hardcore fanatics and I'm partial to a bit of cheese but this disc upsets my fine balance between the various hardcore "subgenres." It's not so much that it was *too* cheesy (although it was), it's just that most of the tracks were frustratingly mediocre. After about an hour, the high-pitched vocals, repetitiveness and average standard of the tracks really started to grate on me. That's not to say the mix was without high points though; Dougal & Gammer's remix of In The Heat Of The Night is massive. You can never go far wrong with those two. I also enjoyed the Sy & Al Storm remix of September's Can't Get Over. As they were the first two tracks, I was really getting into it, expecting something huge. Unfortunately it just didn't live up to my hopes. This disc is a few good tracks sandwiched between an hour of filler and transitioned by fairly average mixing.

When I first saw "Take Me Away" and "Ease The Pressure" at the top of the tracklist for disc 2, I immediately expected a rave breaks mix and was bitterly disappointed to find out this wasn't the case. The rave breaks on the previous Helter Skelter compilations have far and away been the highlight so this was a definite mystery. The disc starts with two very average "UK hardcore" remixes of two amazing breaks tracks and unfortunately this blasphemy gives way to something even worse: an "upfront" remix of the absolute classic "On A Ragga Tip." It feels like the samples were just tacked onto a mediocre already-finished hardcore track as a cash-in afterthought. Awful. The first interesting track came in the form of the "bloopy" freeform-style "Everybody Wants To Be A DJ" which was too basic and repetitive to be truly enjoyable but was still better than punishing my ears with song after song of shrill female vocals. More of the same followed. If this was the so called "twist" to the second disc, it really didn't impress me too much -- but at least it added some much needed variety to things. Why, oh, why (can't you just accept it?) did they have to use the names of classic hardcore tracks? Half of these "remixes" don't even feel like they were influenced by the original songs, more like randomly placed samples used in an attempt to make sub-standard tunes more palatable. After "Breaking Free" had been slaughtered in this manner, the mix actually takes a turn for the better. "Who's Fucked" and "Press Play On Tape (& Play With My Joystick)" are actually.. *shudder*.. enjoyable. "Rudeboy Sounds" is good but not quite what I expected from the incredible Brisk & Stormtrooper pairing. Topvibe's "Bomb Scared 2009", on the other hand, is exactly what I expected: a wreckage of the seminal classic "Bomb Scare." Like the first disc, the mixing here is pretty basic, weak in some places and never anything particularly exciting. As a whole, this is better, but only marginally.

Some praise I have for the album as a whole is to do with the inclusion of many less mainstream hardcore artists. As I'm interested in the future and survival of the genre, this pleased me greatly. Unfortunately, I couldn't recommend this CD on that basis alone. We can only hope that some of the more underground artists on display here improve a lot in the future...
