3.0 out of 5 stars Queen of the TV, 7 Jul 2009
By G. Stevens "filmfiend" (london, england) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having watched the first series in 1970 I had given this a mythic status, even remembering the theme tune, so was understandably both thrilled and nervous to see all 3 series on DVD release. The opening sequence is one of the highlighhts of the 1970's for me, watching magnificent Diana parading through an incredibly grim Leeds, passing what appears to be piles of rubbish in the street, to get to her council flat in 'Margaret Rose House'-Heaven.
The actual programmes are as dated as you would imagine, but if you buy this, you are hardly after 'Friends' style 'rat-tat-tat' comedy writing. Good to see Lynne Perie as head of the tenants association, and Kathy staff as a neighbour. Coarse and unsophisticated and very enjoyable. An interesting point, the 3rd and 4th episodes are in black and white, managing to make the opening sequence even grimmer than colour ( a plus in my view). I know this happened with the 1st series of Upstairs, Downstairs due to strikes. A sign of the times indeed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comedy Dors, 23 May 2009
By C. FULLER (Birmingham, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Back in 1970 when this was first shown on Yorkshire TV I was banned from watching it when visiting my grand parents in Leeds because it showed a council estate in the area and portrayed it in a bad light!
Of course, I watched it when I got back home and loved every episode and have remembered it to this day. I cheered when I saw it was being reissued.
Watch it and transport yourself back to 1970 and enjoy every last drop of comedy squeezed out of the Keith Waterhouse & Willis Hall script by the fabulous Dors who was at her best during this period.
I will certainly be buying the other 2 series.

Forced humour, mostly set in the studios at Kirkstall Road, very poor scripts, early days of Ytv,making comedy was not their forte,so many false lines with poor gags, sorry can not give it any more than one star, hardly any scenes on location, very wooden acting, warner me backside
