With other levels set in Afghanistan, Rio de Janeiro and even underwater this has more action than a dozen Hollywood blockbusters.

But that's just the single player mode - the multiplayer is even more ground-breaking than before, with new co-op options and even more rewards and perks for competitive play.

  • Be the best - Competitive multiplayer is even bigger and better than before, with new kill streak rewards that unlock everything from supply drops to a AC-130 gunship attack.

5.0 out of 5 stars The champ is here, 20 Nov 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) (Video Game)
Modern Warfare 2 is quite simply the greatest first person shooter ever made.

There, I said it. And I said it without reservation or a trace of doubt. Normally I hate when people gush all over a game just because it's new and popular, but in this case, I can't help it. No matter which point of view you look at it from, whether it be sound, graphics, gameplay, storyline, characters or multiplayer options, Modern Warfare 2 is a triumph of gaming.

It's no secret that the first Modern Warfare was an excellent game, reinvigorating what had become a tired series of WW2 shooters and turning it into something that was both relevant and compelling. It didn't hurt that its multiplayer mode was one of the most balanced, imaginative and addictive experiences in years. The task of trying to follow this up with something that not only equalled it, but surpassed it in terms of quality was nothing short of Herculean.

But they did.

Modern Warfare 2 is set several years after the events of the first game. Despite your best efforts, ultranationalists have seized power in Russia and have elevated Imran Zakhaev (the baddy of Modern Warfare) to hero status. A brutal attack on a Russian airport frames America for the crime, resulting in both countries coming to blows. Before the world degenerates into WW3, it's up to you and the other members of an elite multinational counter-terrorist force to find the guy responsible and lay the smackdown on him. It's a fairly simple setup, but the plot is rife with twists and turns. Characters switch sides, old friends and enemies pop up unexpectedly, people get gunned down without warning and a whole lot of stuff blows up, including innocent civilians.

Yes, by now everyone knows about the infamous No Russian level. It stirred up real controversy with the `games promote violence' lunatics, but really I don't see the problem with it. It's meant to be shocking and unpleasant, and to be honest if you're disturbed by the idea of shooting people in a game, you shouldn't be playing an FPS in the first place.

The thing that made the original so enjoyable was the blistering pace and frantic gameplay. When you were plunged into a firefight, you really felt like you were up against it, and that feeling has been enhanced here. Enemies make effective use of cover, suppressing fire and grenades to flush you out. And they're relentless. If you get wounded, forget about just hiding around a corner to heal up - they WILL come after you to finish you off.

Naturally graphics and sound are superb, and the voice over cast is top notch. There's Lance Henriksen (whose gravel voice can make even the worst game seem better), Kevin McKidd, Will Arnett and Keith David. If these guys were in a film together, it'd be impressive enough. The fact they were able to get them for a video game speaks volumes.

The weapon load out has been bumped up for this outing. Now there are literally dozens of pistols, submachine guns, rifles and shotguns, and they all feel individual. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses, and it's up to you to decide which style suits you best. There's also the option to dual-wield pistols, which for me resulted in one of the coolest moments in gaming when I stormed into a room full of terrorists, twin machine pistols blazing fiery death.

But this being an FPS, it'll stand or fall based on its multiplayer. Part of the reason I waited so long before writing this review was to fully experience all aspects of this game, and it has to be said that the multiplayer options in this game are second to none. You can customise just about every aspect of your online character, maps are varied and interesting, there's a vast selection of weapons, and the whole feel and responsiveness of the game engine is just perfect. I guarantee you'll lose entire days of your life playing this, and you won't regret a single second.

Modern Warfare 2 has received a bit of stick from certain quarters with accusations that it doesn't deviate far enough from its predecessor, but I salute developers Infinity Ward for having the courage to stand by their creation. If long-running series have taught us anything, it's that constantly tinkering with a near perfect formula eventually runs the thing into the ground. There's a reason Great White sharks haven't evolved in the past 60 million years - they're already perfect for what they do, and so is Modern Warfare 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute masterpeice. . ., 10 Nov 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) (Video Game)
I've had this game for a couple of days now and if you wondering whether to buy this or not, the simple answer is, yes. One might have thought with all the press attention and hype surrounding this new title that the game could never possibly live up to expectations, but it most certainly does, and even exceeds expectations in certain areas.

First off, single player. Now, being honest the campaign isn't massily long, if your playing on regualar difficulty, expect to play for around 4-6 hours, however, ramp it up to veteran difficulty and you can make that 20+ (serioulsy, its hard!) But I think that the campain can be summed up best by the phrase "short and sweet", the plot is very well laid out and the cinematics are truly outstanding. There is also no lack of variety in this game either, not to spoil the plot, but you'll find yourself fightly in vastly different settings throughout the whole campaign which really does give the campaign an epic feeling. Overall the single player is well rounded and truly an astonashingly cinematic experience which you cannot afford to miss.

Now, to what most people buy COD for, the multiplayer. If you've played COD4, then you will instantly fell right at home with MW2. However, this doesn't mean it hasn't changed. The massive new list of guns, perks, kilstreaks, unlockables will have you playing for years. In all my years of gaming I have never played a more well rounded online multiplayer experience. The multiplayer is genuinly worth the £.. alone.

Also thrown into the mix is spec ops mode, which sees you take on a variety of different missions in 2-player co-op (Splitcreen/online) which range from holding down positions against waves of oncoming enemies to snomobile races which are absolutely hilarious! This is a great addition to the game just as Nazi zombies was to CODW@W - but better with more variety.

Overall, I serioulsy cannot fault this game. The single player experience is epic and the multiplayer is unrivalled by anything on the market, and with spec ops throw into the mix, this is an absolute MUST BUY.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid and enjoyable game but is it really as good as it's made out to be?, 30 Nov 2009

Ok, ok... Maybe this review is a few days overdue but I felt that I can't really review a game properly until I've played it a decent amount (I've had the game since the release date). Now I have completed the single player on veteran difficulty, and had a decent crack on multiplayer an Special Ops.

THREE MODES:

There are 3 'modes' to Modern Warfare 2 (MW2), the single player campaign, Special Ops and multiplayer. I will deal with each in turn.

SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN:

Short but sweet sums this up in a nutshell. It will keep you going for around 6-10 hours, I racked up over 14 hours on veteran to make it last a bit longer! It plays very similar to the original Modern Warfare (CoD 4) and continues where the previous story left off. New guns have been added and there is another far-fetched and controversial story line but over all I would say that if you enjoy FPS and liked CoD 4 you will feel right at home. The graphics have been improved upon since CoD 4 and are excellent. AI, in my opinion, was actually quite good too.

A note on "that level"... There is an option to skip the level where you infiltrate a Russian terrorist cell and go about shooting civilians in an airport. If you do play the level, you have the choice whether or not to shoot any civilians and this disturbing level (at least the first half) adds to the story by portraying this event in a bad light and, unless you are that way inclined, I don't think this will make you more of a violent person as the media would portray it. This level is the reason why the game is rated 18 and I suppose that it rightly so.

SPECIAL OPS:

A new addition, supposedly Infinity Ward did not want to include co-op in the single player so opted for this instead. Special Ops is a series of 'mini-games' which last from 1-2 minutes to around 10-15 minutes. The mode puts you and your team (up to four, human friends, online or off) into a variety of situations which you must complete. This can be anything from a jet ski race to holding off waves of zombies, to an assault or even escorting your team-mates(s). It's a different and challenging addition to the main single player and multiplayer modes and is best played with others to get the most out of it. Each mission has three difficulty levels and you are awarded 1-3 stars for every level of difficulty. Stars unlock more levels and Trophies. There are 69 in all (hence 23 levels). Personally, I don't believe this is as good as the 'Nazi Zombies' mode on World at War but that is personal preference.

MULTIPLAYER:

Obviously this is where the `longetivity' of CoD lies. Much of what I state is personal opinion but from my experience I enjoy multiplayer and would describe it as (just about) more fun than CoD 4 and World at War. There are 70 ranks to achieve, without even thinking about Prestige, and numerous guns, perks, equipment and challenges to unlock/complete. The multiplayer can obviously be contrasted with that of CoD 4. It plays very similarly so if you enjoyed CoD 4 multiplayer you will enjoy this. The levels are (just about) varied enough and there is a decent variety of guns to satisfy every taste, from assault rifles and sniper rifles to missile launchers, shotguns and pistols.

It is probably best at this point to talk about the new features of multiplayer... Aside from there now be 70 ranks, the most notable differences for me are as follows:

* Your secondary weapon can be a machine pistol, shotgun, pistol or missile launcher.
* Riot shield: A new primary 'weapon' which is self-explanatory. Bullets ricochet off it and it is great for defence from the front. However, aside from melee, you have no means of attack without switching to your secondary weapon. (The shield then covers your back).
* Perks and 'Pro-perks': Perks are now, simply put, upgradeable once you have satisfied various criteria (usually a certain number of kills). An example would be the new 'commando' perk (further melee reach) which when upgraded to 'commando pro' enables you to take no fall damage.
* Killstreaks and deathstreaks: There are many more killstreaks (UAV, counter-UAV, sentry gun, airstrikes, EMP, nuke(!) etc) and 'deathstreaks' which kick-in when you have died 3-4 times without a kill (e.g. martyrdom; extra health).
* Titles, emblems and accolades: Various unlocks which add a personal element to the multiplayer experience, for example, achieve (say) 10 airstrikes and you can put a nice picture of an aeroplane next to your name; or a flag with your country's colours on.
* More points when you kill. In real terms, this is the same as CoD 4 (you need more points to reach a higher level than CoD 4, whereas, say, it would have been 100 points to reach rank 2, it is now 1000) but it certainly feels better when you get +50 or +100 flashing up for a kill than a measly +5 or +10!

Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list but I feel these are the most noticeable additions to the multiplayer experience and all are positive too. After the initial getting used to the levels layout and a few promotions you will feel right at home. Until you get bored, the multiplayer mode will keep you going for hours and hours.

I hope this has provided you with an in-depth view of Modern Warfare 2. Overall, the game is not perfect (short single player, interesting Special Ops mode and arguably standard this is a highly enjoyable game and not too distinguishable from its predecessor, CoD 4, or indeed even a million miles away from its cousin, World at War.

So, if you enjoyed either, or both, of these games or even FPS at large you will enjoy Modern Warfare 2 and all it has to offer.
