Product Description

Singer Josef Locke (Ned Beatty) fled to Ireland 25 years ago to escape the clutches of the tax man and police Chief Jim Abbott (David McCallum). What he also left behind was the love of his life Cathleen Doyle (Shirley Anne Field). Now, Micky O’Neill (Adrian Dunbar) is desperate to save both his ailing Liverpool nightclub ‘Heartly’s’ and his failing relationship with the beautiful Nancy (Tara Fitzgerald), Cathleen’s daughter. The solution? Book the infamous Josef Locke. Mr. X. (is he or isn’t he the real Josef Locke?), is booked to play the club. Disaster strikes when he is revealed as an imposter, Micky loses the club and his girlfriend in one night. Next solution? This time book the real Josef Locke! What follows can only be described as magical mayhem as Micky travels to Ireland in search of the elusive man.

Well written and acted film. Good performances from Adrian Dunbar, James Nesbitt, Ned Beatty, Tara Fitzgerald and several others. Loosely based on the true story of Josef Locke, his exile back in Ireland for several years (not 25 years though) to escape the UK taxman and the opportunism of a Jo Locke sound-a-like/look-a-like. Peter Chelsom is probably one of the most unrecognized talents in the movie industry. This film should have been out on DVD several years ago compared to some of the rubbish which Hollywood churns out. Highly recommended movie.

It doesn't matter if you have never heard of this Irish tenor, or even like that kind of music, this is a marvelously warm film. Adrian Dunbar is a promoter of a club, in the UK, who normally books look-a-likes, however after several disasters he decides to find the man himself - Josef Locke (yes, this is the correct spelling). He travels to Ireland and after some searching he finally meets him and persuades him to come back and do one last performance. The reason for Josef being in Ireland is to avoid UK tax, of which he owes an undisclosed amount. With the UK police trying to catch him this is a more than pleasant caper. (And I bet you can't help humming the main theme, "Hear my song")
PS Don't miss the cow and the well scene.
Enjoy

An excellent comedy, very warm and funny, and it's finally available on DVD. But be warned, the initial scene with Micky Doyle's mother has been cut from this version, so if you think that added anything (not sure I do), hang on to your old video version.

ABOUT THE MOVIE: Hear My Song is a "love it or hate it" movie. Most Americans won't fully understand it but will laugh and revel in the film's quirkiness. Most Brits WILL fully understand and will find it humorous and enjoyable. Regardless, it's a definite 'must see'. Hear My Song recounts just a few weeks in the madcap world of a ethnically-Irish-moved-to-Liverpool concert promoter named Mickey O'Neill in the early 80s, who struggles to book 'tribute' acts (like Franc Cinatra(!?)) for his night club "Heartley's" and make enough money to survive. He's always on the brink of closure and constantly looks for new, popular, and interesting singers to keep from being closed down by the consortium of Liverpudlian (yes, you Yanks, that's really the term for someone from Liverpool) 'war-era' ladies who own the club he's renting. In a moment of desperation, he and his assistants book Josef Locke--a famous British tenor from years gone by--as a last ditch effort to appease the ladies and keep the club open. The only problem is that Joe Locke is not in the country! He's living in Ireland to escape arrest in Britain for tax evasion. So who is the man that Mickey O'Neill booked? Mister X...a Joe Locke impersonator. From that moment on, the hilarity begins. Sprinkled with laughter, fun, stunning performances by Ned Beatty, police chases, gorgeous Irish countryside, local flavours and perspectives, and yes, the obligatory love interest (and just a bit of sex...almost), this movie WILL leave you happy. A definite feel-good movie, it's fun enough for a guy to tolerate and good enough to be a chick-flick too! OH...and yes...Joe Locke is REAL!Read more ›

"Hear My Song" is a wonderful romantic comedy, which I purchased at Amazon.uk because it is not available for the region one DVD players in the U. S. It played perfectly on my region-free DVD player so I have no technical issues with the disc.

As for the story, it reminds me very much of "A Room With A View" wherein one character has committed to another and the conflict that arises is from the reluctance of that second character to also commit to their relationship. I don't think that I'm giving anything away in saying that everything works out well in the end because in both films it is the journey to that end which captivates the audience. Women will like it because it is smart, and funny, and romantic (a typical "chick" flick). Men will like it because it is smarter than most of them, and funny, and sticking it to the tax man.

A great Movie about an all time great - Josef Locke.
Part Truth, part Fiction, the real star is Ned Beaty, who gave a wonderful portrail as the great man himself.
The singing was performed by Vernon Midgley, well synchronized by Beaty.
A nice appearance by Harold Berens as the band leader Benny Rose.

For those of you who are too young to remember Josef Locke, buy the CDs and definitely buy this DVD, I have waited four years for this to come out, I wasn't disappointed, neither will you.

I have been trying to locate a copy of this wonderful film since it was first shown on TV a few years ago, and at last Amazon came up trumps!. Was it a disappointment after all this time? Yes in as much as the very significant first scenes were cut for some strange reason. But it is still the wonderful heartwarming film I remember.
This is a lovely feel-good film with a great story, built around real life events. Allowing of course for a bit of poetic license! Joseph Locke's voice is a joy, (who can resist joining in with all those great old songs?) and the whole cast are excellent especially Ned Beatty as the man himself.
