Afro Samurai is a showcase for stylish anime, it looks superb and although the music isn't my cup of tea - it fits this five-part series well. Set in a world which seems like a cross between the wild west and ancient Japan with modern technology (such as mobile phones), we see a society which regards the number 1 samurai as nothing short of a God. Ambitious ninja-types covet the number 1 headband and put their life on the line to challenge the roaming number 2 samurai - for only the wearer of the number 2 headband can challenge the number 1.

Afro, as a child, witnessed the killing of his father and the transfer of the number 1 crown to a strange looking fighter called Justice. The adult Afro (now the holder of number 2 position) starts off on a journey of violence to claim the top spot and avenge his father's death. Although we get frequent flashbacks to his back story, the series does feel very much like a 'baddy of the week' serial as Afro invariably travels from fight to fight. The initial awe at the stylish visuals subsides as the series simply fails to deliver anything other than a high body count.

Despite the high quality of animation there are weaknesses present, sometimes the dialogue doesn't match the mouths of those speaking. Normally when that occurs it's simply because the English dub has a different word count to the Japanese soundtrack and it's something you accept if you opt to watch a dub. But with Afro Samurai there isn't that excuse as the project was created as an English language piece, and it's off-putting when you see a character's mouth moving rapidly along with words that don't synchronise very well - almost as if the dialogue was decided afterwards and the timings didn't quite match that of the animation.

In an era filled with violence, samurai and hip-hop there exist 2 legendary headbands. The number 1 headband grants it's owner godlike status and displays it's owner as the best warrior in the world. The owner of the headband is virtually untouchable by anyone unless they have the number 2 headband. With the number 2 headband, the bearer is able to challenge the number 1 for his godlike status, yet the number 2 is also forced to lead a life of death and seclusion as anyone seeking a life of power and invulnerability will try to kill the person who owns it.

After witnessing the death of his father, an unnamed afro haired samurai begins a life dedicated to finding the person responsible. As his father was the number 1 samurai, the killer consequently takes his place and aquisitions the number 1 headband. Due to this the Afro Samurai must first search for the number 2 headband in order to challenge the person who murdered his father before his very eyes.
Afro Samurai is perhaps more well known purely because of the star studded voice cast which include none other than hollywood star Samuel L Jackson and Hellboy star Ron Perlman. With some great vocal performances from these actors, Afro Samurai turns out to be an entertaining, action packed gorefest.
Lasting only five episodes, series 1 of Afro Samurai moves at a pretty brisk pace compared to other anime series'. However, despite this, the story is still incredibly gripping with some nice sub storylines intertwined with the main story, making this series really enjoyable to watch.

The animation is of a very high quality and it is evident that this is a big budget outing.

This is great, 5 Mini episodes all about 25 minutes each. Its a samurai futuristic revenge story. But after a while it does get a bit boring and repetitive, but you can just wait until the episodes over, but at the end there is always a cliff hanger, just making you watch the next episode. I didn't really watch it for the story, it can be a mindless action film if you want with an interesting story if that's what your looking for. It feels like Quentin Tarantino dropped in a couple times while making this because it does feel like one of his films, and the fact that Sam J is in it just adds to it. Worth a watch, definitely a good addition to my Bluray collection but it aint no Cowboy Bebop!

I completely agree with the previous reviews- Off the chain!! And that's pretty uncharacteristic for me to say, but that's the effect `Afro Samurai' has. It touches the viewer in the way only pure anime can- animation transformed into something epic. With the golden-voiced Samuel L. Jackson, flawless animation, a perfectly pitched, evocative score and an original, ultramodern storyline what might have been just a novelty appealing to only a niche market, `Afro Samurai' becomes a very real visceral experience with mass appeal.

Comprised of just five episodes totalling 110 minutes this feels more like a mini-series or a movie that happens to be split into five parts. I think it's doubtful that the quality could be replicated if it was ever turned into a proper series in the future, but I'd still tune in to see the result.

It also demands very little of the viewer, allowing you to just sit back and enjoy the action. The only downside is that it has to come to an end so soon. But for the price you can't argue with what you get for your money. Five episodes of fantastic quality with extra's and limited edition features to boot. Truly an intoxicating experience, not for the faint-hearted, but only for those who revel in an all-out animated revenge fest.
