DVD Description

Ideal has just about everything – a great script, great characters and actors – and Johnny Vegas at his best.” --The Observer

Johnny Vegas stars as Moz in the multi-award winning Ideal. With their relationship going down the pan, Moz and long suffering girlfriend Nicki both embark on secret affairs. Whilst Nicki hooks up with Salford’s dopiest Police Constable, Moz discovers love in the arms of a very surprising companion…

Meanwhile, in the world of disorganised crime, former best mates Cartoon Head and Psycho Paul go head to head in a gangland war. Can Moz avoid getting dragged into this potentially fatal conflict? Can he and Nicki keep their simultaneous affairs secret? And will he ever discover the true identity of his new neighbour, a mysterious and frightening man known only as Fist?

With its unique mix of hilarious character comedy, cutting edge music and eye-popping visual set pieces, series four also boasts a special guest appearance from Julia Davis and a fantastic 90s flashback episode revealing just how Moz started dealing...

5.0 out of 5 stars Consistently brilliant, 24 May 2009
Ideal is a show that has gone from strength to strength throughout the years. Easily dismissable as 'a show about drugs', it is in fact so much more. The plots thicken with relative ease and the characters that come in and out of Moz's life are relentlessly funny, each with their own seperate storyline playing itself out. Only when they pop in to visit their friendly local dealer do we get a fleeting glimpse into their ludicrous but charming lifestyles.

This series is, of course, no exception to the show's brilliance. We see a gang war erupting between Psycho Paul's hapless gang of morons and the deadly Chinese Triads, who we soon discover is being led by an all-too familiar character. On top of this, things finally hit the rocks with Moz and Nicky, and Moz finds new love in a very unexpected place. Meanwhile, an ominous new neighbour is spelling trouble, but how and for what reason, we are still unsure.

Graham Duff, as usual, hits the nail on the head with his excellent use of smart wit, occasional stark violence, choice of backing music and often placid but sometimes hard-hitting plotlines. Still based solely in the three flats at the top of the stairs (Moz's, Judith's and new character Fist's), it maintains that air of familiarity that keeps it warm, cosy and nicely complacent.

The brief appearances of each character mean that we are not too tied up in one particular story to forget everything else, but meanwhile we are kept nicely up to date on the petty foibles of each seperate character and they never fail to amuse.

This is by far the most action-packed and gripping series to date, and if you were a fan of the previous three, you will not be disappointed. It also has one of the greatest series finales I've seen in modern sitcoms.

The DVD extras are also great. We are given a peek into the making of the flashback episode, and the meticulous effort that went into making the flat look like an authentic 1990's raver/bachelor pad. There are also a heap of outtakes and deleted scenes, and a 30-minute 'Sounds Ideal' documentary in which Duff talks about the music he uses in the show, detailing his reasons for each song and talking to the artists about what inspired them.

In closing: Buy it now, it's scrummy!
