Product Description

On the dark path of swordsmanship in a "Futuristic" yet Feudal Japan, it is said that the one who becomes No.1 will rule the world. But the only rule in this world is that only the No. 2 is allowed to fight the No. 1. The No. 2, the Afro Samurai, travels the road looking for revenge on the man who murdered his father in front of him when he was just a boy, a three-armed gunman who is the lord of the dark swordsman's road and the current No. 1.

I came to this hoping it would be really great, it looks like it should be an insane mix of Pulp Fiction and Kung Fu, but the pace is quite slow, sometimes unbearably so. It's dark in tone, which I like, although some viewers might find it too grim. The artwork is stylish, but a bit muddy. It has some nice ideas in the world it creates and the enemies that Afro encounters, but it doesn't really develop the, so I came away thinking this was a bit disappointing.

I'm a huge anime/manga fan and a friend of mine recomended this series to me, every time I saw him after he recomended it to me he'd ask if I'd watched it yet, and my answer to him always 'no'.

So finally I bought the first season not really knowing what to expect, I watched all the episodes, five in total, in one sitting and I loved it...

It's funny, querky and yet very violent and bloody, and in some areas quite sad (as in a depressing way and not in a lame way) but not a teary eyed girlie way...but somehow it all works.

Samuel L. Jackson's voice over is fantasticly done, it really does bring out the characters, whereas I've watched anime where the English voice overs make me cringe and I've had to watch episodes in Japanese with subs, not that I mind though.

Anyways, if your into the martial arts kinda anime where theres lots of blood then you should definatley watch this, it is absolutley fantastic.

The artwork & design is SUPERB, giving the series a unique & quirky feel. An intense storyline with a dash of black humour that blends well. All the characters are captured perfectly with excellent voice acting. The 25 minute episodes are jam-packed & always leave you wanting more. The extras disc is certainly well worth watching too. This FANTASTIC anime is definately for adults only due to the extreme violence & strong language.

I love this movie and would recommend it to all adults. Subtitles should be an option in every movie though but wasn't in this one....:(. I especially love the service of Amazon purchases...... :)

I'm a huge anime fan, enjoying everything from the gentle fantasy of the Ghibli fables, to the dark gothic chills of Elfen Lied and Claymore, the poignancy of Haibene Renmai to the crazy humour of Excel Saga. So I was really pleased to receive Afro Samurai as a gift. I must admit though that, despite it ticking most of the classic anime boxes, it didn't really grab me as a story and I struggled a bit to get into it.

The flimsiest of background stories (kid wants revenge for his dad being killed in an unfair duel) is the barely adequate platform for battle after battle with increasingly implausible adversaries. You have to concede that it's got a certain style though. In the English version, Samuel L Jackson voices both the titular 'hero' (that's probably the wrong word!) and his foul-mouthed 'gangsta' sidekick (think of Eddie Murphy's donkey in Shrek talking about errm... "Mother Hubbards" or something similar) and everyone's favourite Neanderthal Ron Perlman voices his adversary. It's brutal, with ridiculously OTT gore aplenty. It's sexy in places, with a few borderline hentai/18-kin scenes. It raises the odd smile for some off-beat humour and it's quite classy on occasion, with some eye-bogglingly spectacular scenarios.

So, to summarise, whilst Afro Samurai's basic premise is rather weak and laboured and its gangsta/hip-hop theme may not appeal to many anime aficionados, the heart-stopping action and some quite cleverly developed poignancy just about won me over by the end.

It's no anime classic. It does grate a bit in places and it's a clear example of attempted style over substance, but it's still worth a look.

In an era filled with violence, samurai and hip-hop there exist 2 legendary headbands. The number 1 headband grants it's owner godlike status and displays it's owner as the best warrior in the world. The owner of the headband is virtually untouchable by anyone unless they have the number 2 headband. With the number 2 headband, the bearer is able to challenge the number 1 for his godlike status, yet the number 2 is also forced to lead a life of death and seclusion as anyone seeking a life of power and invulnerability will try to kill the person who owns it.

After witnessing the death of his father, an unnamed afro haired samurai begins a life dedicated to finding the person responsible. As his father was the number 1 samurai, the killer consequently takes his place and aquisitions the number 1 headband. Due to this the Afro Samurai must first search for the number 2 headband in order to challenge the person who murdered his father before his very eyes.
Afro Samurai is perhaps more well known purely because of the star studded voice cast which include none other than hollywood star Samuel L Jackson and Hellboy star Ron Perlman. With some great vocal performances from these actors, Afro Samurai turns out to be an entertaining, action packed gorefest.
Lasting only five episodes, series 1 of Afro Samurai moves at a pretty brisk pace compared to other anime series'. However, despite this, the story is still incredibly gripping with some nice sub storylines intertwined with the main story, making this series really enjoyable to watch.

The animation is of a very high quality and it is evident that this is a big budget outing.
