Synopsis

Kim Jee-won (A TALE OF TWO SISTERS) directs this big-budget take on the Western genre that unites three of Korean cinema's most popular actors: Jung Woo-Sung, Lee Byung-hun, and Song Kang-ho. In the 1930s Manchurian desert, a search for a map brings together three very different men who seem to exemplify the characteristics of the title. In this Korean-language film, all of the actors--including the top-billed stars--performed their own stunts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird & Wonderful "Western"., 16 Jul 2009
Kim Jee-Woon`s The Good,The Bad ,The Weird owes more than a passing nod to the influence of the great Sergio Leone. As in Tarantino`s Kill Bill homage to the Master, the style & mood of this movie has paid it`s dues. The story is a simple one, 3 men competing with eachother for the posession of a treasure map that will make the lucky owner rich. Western mythology has been transported to 30`s, Japanese occupied Manchuria, which seems entirely populated by bandits, cut-throats & thieves. When, in turn, they all learn of the map`s existence, the screen is filled with hundreds of desperate men hurtling across the sun scorched desert wastelands in hot pursuit. The movie is skilfully directed with exceptional cinematography & utterly original in it`s quirky, off centre humour & slant on the western genre. Action & violence are copious, as just about every weapon in the arsenal-and then some- is used to increase the sky high body count in just about every way possible & impossible. The Blu-ray picture is pin sharp, giving a vibrant, detailed & impressive colour scheme.Audio is crisp & clear with plenty of muscle in the bass which will give the speakers a good workout. There are a large amount of impressive & informative extras on just about every aspect of an outstanding production. Everything you wanted to know about the movie is there. It`s a wild, funny action packed movie which has taken from it`s influences & twisted & turned them into a highly original, visually beautiful & well acted film. It`s an outstanding disc in every way which I highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars half baked, 5 Aug 2009
By Peter Walsh (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
It's OK to good. Photography/light is impressive, pace fine and a couple of the scenes - rooftop rope gliding while wheeling Winchester - are breathtaking. But it doesn't have the pathos, grandeur and scope of the original, of course, and where it should have gone further it hangs back. It's not gritty enough. The bad and the good look like too-proud kids. The chase scenes are interminable and the sets familiar through the film. The original had a literary, classic scope with vast sets and panoramas. This suffers from a low budget and is merely fun. Hey, if you're going to copy, you have your work cut out.
